The Kansas City Chiefs didnāt just lose games in 2025 ā they lost something far harder to replace.
Thatās the belief of franchise legend Jamaal Charles, who opened up this week in an interview with Chiefs Wire about the quiet factors behind Kansas Cityās stunning 6ā11 season.
A mission that hits close to home
Charles spoke while discussing his new role as an NFL Alumni ambassador for the GEAR UP Against Cancer campaign, working with the CDC to fight lung cancer. His motivation is deeply personal.
āMy mama has diabetes, but she still smokes,ā Charles said. āWith her having diabetes and smoking at the same time, itās not good for her health. Thatās why I wanted to be part of this campaign.ā
But the conversation quickly turned to football ā and what, in his eyes, disappeared from the Chiefsā championship DNA.
The coach everyone forgot
āI think when we were on that title run, we had a lot of pieces,ā Charles explained. āThen those pieces started to drop off ā like coaches.ā
He didnāt hesitate to name the biggest one.
Eric Bieniemy.
āMost people donāt really understand,ā Charles said. āHe played a big role from the beginning ā getting me to the running back I was. He took my career to the next level, Coach Andy Reid did too.ā
Charles credited Bieniemyās accountability, intensity and leadership ā the traits that once made players want to fight for every yard.
āThe way he holds players accountable, the way you want to play for a guy like that, the way that he pushes you ā and then you still have Andy Reid. Those were the pieces that made that title run historic.ā
Bieniemy is now
After spending nine seasons in Kansas City, Bieniemy left to become offensive coordinator and assistant head coach of the Washington Commanders in 2023. He is now the running backs coach for the NFC North champion Chicago Bears ā while the Chiefs are searching for answers.
Hope ā and a warning
Despite the collapse, Charles still believes Kansas Cityās window isnāt closed.
āPat, Chris, Travis ā theyāre part of the culture,ā he said. āBut once you lose some of those cultural pieces, itās hard to keep track. Itās hard to keep a dynasty forever.ā
Still, he sees a familiar fire in Mahomes ā one he recognizes from his own career.
āI came back from my ACL with vengeance,ā Charles said. āPat will come back with more. He sees whatās going on.ā
For Charles, the message is simple:
The Chiefs didnāt just lose games in 2025 ā they lost the heartbeat that once made them champions.
