Patrick Kielty’s family are said to have been left deeply upset — and quietly fuming — over a pivotal moment they believe signalled the end of his marriage to TV presenter Cat Deeley.
The couple confirmed their split last month with a joint statement, revealing: “We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved. We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and kindly ask for privacy. There will be no further comment.”
But insiders claim that Cat’s absence from the funeral of Patrick’s mother Mary in March left a lasting mark on the Kielty family. For many, it was the moment they realised the relationship had passed the point of no return.
One family member told the Daily Mail: “Whatever rockiness was going on in the marriage, something as momentous as his mother’s funeral — you make up, even temporarily, and put your best face on. Cat knew how close Patrick was to Mary. She should have been there, a hand on his shoulder, as he buried his mother.”
Instead, Cat stayed in London, presenting This Morning on the very day of the service. “It hasn’t been forgotten,” the relative added, noting that friends and family were stunned by her decision.
The source said: “That was the point we all realised the marriage had ended.”
At the time, a spokesperson explained that Cat had remained at home to be there for the couple’s two young children before and after school on that difficult day.
Patrick’s family have since been rallying around him as he adjusts to life after the split.
The pair’s love story began in 2002 when they co-hosted BBC’s Fame Academy, though they kept their relationship private until 2011. A year later, in September 2012, they wed in Rome and went on to have two children together.
Today, Cat co-presents This Morning alongside Ben Shephard, while Patrick fronts RTÉ’s The Late Late Show after taking over from Ryan Tubridy in 2023.
It’s unclear exactly when the cracks in their marriage began to appear, though their separate living arrangements — with Patrick based in Ireland and Cat in London — are believed to have played a part.
The last time Cat mentioned Patrick on Instagram was in October 2023, sharing a playful set of 90s-inspired photos of the couple, captioned: “Slightly terrifying but obsessed.” Their final public appearance together came a month earlier, when they were photographed smiling at an event and later seated among the audience.
