A woman’s body was discovered along a canal in Phoenix, Arizona, raising questions about a potential link to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.
The remains were found on Friday, over 100 miles away from Tucson, where Nancy was last seen on February 1. Authorities reported that a call indicated an adult female had been found unresponsive near the canal bank. When officers arrived at the scene, the woman was confirmed dead on-site.
While the investigation continues, Pima County authorities, based in Tucson, stated that there is currently no indication that the discovery is related to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. Phoenix Police have yet to release any identifying details about the woman found near the canal.
Frustration Over Slow Investigation
The slow pace of the investigation has caused growing frustration among Nancy Guthrie’s loved ones. Her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, who is also the co-host of Today, has been vocal about the emotional toll the case has taken on the family. Savannah has offered a $1 million reward for any information leading to her mother’s safe return or recovery.
Security footage from Nancy’s doorbell camera shows a masked individual — or possibly two different individuals — lingering near her doorstep the night before she was believed to have been taken. Police suspect she may have been abducted.
The case remains under intense scrutiny, with Pima County Sheriff’s Department stating that more than 300 to 400 personnel continue to be assigned to the investigation — a team that remains just as large as when the case first opened. Despite a substantial amount of evidence, including traces of blood, still being analyzed, Sheriff Chris Nanos indicated that it could take up to a year to fully process all of the DNA-related evidence.
A Family in Despair
Nancy Guthrie, a former teacher and advocate, was last seen leaving her home in Tucson, Arizona, on January 31. The investigation into her disappearance has turned into one of the most high-profile cases in recent months. As authorities comb through more evidence, including recovered security footage and forensic traces, the uncertainty continues to weigh heavily on Nancy’s children — including Savannah, Annie, and Camron Guthrie.
In a public plea for information, Savannah Guthrie, alongside her siblings, urged anyone with information to come forward. Their hopes remain high, but the case is far from being solved, and time continues to slip away.
As of now, Pima County officials have not ruled out the possibility that the body discovered in Phoenix could be connected to the case. The investigation is ongoing, with many unanswered questions still lingering about Nancy’s fate.
With the search for answers continuing, the Guthrie family’s resolve is unwavering as they hold on to hope, waiting for the return of their beloved mother and grandmother.
