Miriam Margolyes, the renowned actress famous for portraying Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films, has shared a deeply emotional update on her health, revealing that she “doesn’t have long to live.” At 85 years old, Margolyes opened up about the toll her ongoing health struggles have taken on her body in a candid interview with Weekend Magazine.Miriam Margolyes appears on "Loose Women" in 2024.

Health Issues and Personal Reflection

The beloved star, who now relies on a walker, acknowledged that much of her current condition was the result of neglecting her health. “I’ve let my body down,” she confessed. “I haven’t taken care of it. I have to walk with a walker now. I wish I’d done more exercise. It’s the most ghastly waste of time, except that it keeps you going. So, I’m foolish.”

Rejecting Quick Fixes and Advocating for Change

Margolyes also spoke out about the growing trend of Ozempic usage for weight loss, firmly stating, “Absolutely not. That’s for diabetics. You shouldn’t take medicine meant for people who are really sick.” She also voiced concerns about food advertising, calling for a ban on such ads, particularly on television.Miriam Margolyes attends the Oxford Literary Festival 2025 on March 29, 2025.

Facing the Grim Reality

Reflecting on her uncertain future, Margolyes admitted that her health outlook is dire. After undergoing a heart procedure, she shared, “When you know that you haven’t got long to live, and I’m probably going to die within the next five or six years, if not before, I’m loath to leave behind performing.” However, she added, “It’s such a joy,” and expressed a desire to take on roles beyond a wheelchair, though she acknowledged, “I’m just not strong enough” to do so.Miriam Margolyes attends the world premiere of "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows - Part 2."

Health Struggles and Mobility Issues

Margolyes has also been battling spinal stenosis, a condition that causes narrowing of the spinal canal and leads to significant mobility challenges. She has been forced to register as disabled and now relies on mobility aids such as canes, walkers, wheelchairs, and a scooter to get around. Despite these physical setbacks, she remains dedicated to her craft and continues to work in the entertainment industry.

A Heart Procedure and Reflections on Mortality

Last year, Margolyes underwent a successful transcatheter aortic valve replacement to avoid more invasive heart surgery. In typical Miriam fashion, she humorously remarked, “I’ve got a cow’s heart now. Well, not the whole heart. I’ve had an aortic valve replaced by a cow’s aortic valve.”

Despite her openness about the decline in her health, Miriam shared that she’s not afraid of death. “When you’re young, you never think about death. You just think about your next f—k, basically,” she said. “I think about death a lot… There is no light at the end of the tunnel.”Miriam Margolyes in 2022.

Loss and Moving Forward

Miriam has faced the heartbreak of losing many of her Harry Potter co-stars, including Alan Rickman (Severus Snape), Richard Harris (Albus Dumbledore), and Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid). Still, she continues to navigate the grief of these losses, finding strength in her ongoing career and the love of her fans.

Her candid reflections on aging, health, and mortality offer a poignant look at a life well-lived and the resilience required to keep moving forward, even in the face of overwhelming challenges.
