For over two years, fans have wondered why legendary singer Michael Bolton vanished from the public eye. Now, in a touching and revealing interview with AARP, Michael’s daughters, Isa and Taryn, have opened up about his life-or-death battle with glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.
They revealed the iconic 72-year-old singer is now in “very good spirits and very good health” following a harrowing year filled with surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy. “He faces challenges, but he’s strong, his mobility and cognition have been fantastic,” Isa shared, offering a glimpse of hope in a fight that many thought impossible.
In December 2023, Michael learned he had glioblastoma after an emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor. He endured a second operation to treat an infection and months of radiation and chemotherapy. Despite the aggressive nature of the disease, which has a dismal prognosis, Michael has made remarkable progress. “It’s tested me in ways I never imagined,” he said, but expressed deep gratitude for his recovery.
A Battle Against the Odds
Glioblastoma is one of the deadliest and most common forms of brain cancer. With a median survival rate of just nine months and only a 7% survival rate beyond five years, Michael’s diagnosis was devastating for his family. The initial signs included persistent headaches, mood swings, memory issues, and even a fall that led to his surgery. Isa described the changes as “significant,” noting a “personality change” that initially scared his grandchildren.
However, despite the challenges, Michael has made an inspiring recovery, regaining his former self with the help of physical therapy, yoga, and the unwavering support of his family. “It’s been a tough journey, but we’re in a good place now,” Taryn said.
Family Strength and Support
Michael’s daughters, Isa, Taryn, and Holly, have become his primary caregivers, with Taryn living with him full-time in Westport, Connecticut, while Isa stays three days a week and Holly visits once a month. Their role as caregivers has been physically and emotionally exhausting, but the time spent together has only strengthened their family bond. “We’ve probably shared more meals with him in the last two years than we have in our entire lives,” Isa reflected.
Michael’s recovery has brought the family closer than ever, and he continues to express his gratitude for their support. “They remind me of who I am and what’s worth fighting for,” he said in a heartfelt message to AARP. Michael also thanked his fans for their encouragement, writing, “A few words from someone you’ve never met can lift your spirit and steady your steps.”
A Remarkable Journey of Love and Courage
As Michael Bolton continues his battle with glioblastoma, the love from his family and fans has been a constant source of strength. The family remains united in their care for him, with Michael’s daughters offering him unwavering love and support as they navigate this difficult chapter together.
