In a candid and emotional interview on Good Morning Britain, Rebecca Wilcox, daughter of TV legend and Childline founder Dame Esther Rantzen, revealed that her family is struggling to accept the harsh reality of her mother’s terminal diagnosis. Dame Esther, 85, was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer in 2023, and her condition has since worsened, with treatments no longer proving effective.

Rebecca admitted that, despite the gravity of the situation, the family remains in a state of “denial.” “As a family, we’re great because we live in denial about everything. I mean, who has cancer? No one has cancer,” she said. “But, obviously, it’s a really weird time, as anyone who has someone they adore with a terminal diagnosis will know. You live in a constant state of anxiety between scans.”

Dame Esther, known for her courage and activism, has defied the odds, surviving not only the cancer but the grueling treatments. “Mum is incredible,” Rebecca shared. “She’s surviving the cancer and the treatments. She’s now palliative, and the treatments have stopped working. And she’s still going.”
As the assisted dying bill remains in limbo, Rebecca expressed her frustration. Dame Esther has long been a vocal supporter of the bill, even joining the Dignitas assisted dying clinic in Switzerland. “She has said, before, that she’s leaving the door open to go abroad if the law isn’t passed in time,” Rebecca explained. “If that happens, she will go to Dignitas before her time here ends, and she will go alone.”
Rebecca also shared the heartbreaking reality of the situation for her family, knowing that supporting Dame Esther’s wishes could lead to serious personal and professional consequences. “We knew it would never come in time for mum,” she said, “and we’ll likely be investigated for supporting her. I could lose my job, and my family could face similar consequences.”
The emotional toll on Rebecca and her family is immeasurable, as they navigate the heart-wrenching reality of watching Dame Esther fight for control over her final days.
“It’s utterly heartbreaking,” said Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway. “Dame Esther deserves peace, and her family deserves to be there with her.”
As Dame Esther continues her courageous battle, Rebecca’s fierce advocacy for her mother and the rights of terminally ill patients remains unwavering, despite the personal sacrifices it entails.
