Appearing on the March 24 episode, Leni’s parents, Gus and Emily, spoke with hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls about their daughter’s diagnosis of Sanfilippo syndrome, a rare genetic disorder often called childhood dementia. This condition means Leni will begin losing her memory and motor skills as early as age three, with no cure currently available.

Emily described her daughter as “sunshine” but heartbreakingly admitted that the condition often shows no signs until it’s too late. “The most shocking part… is that we didn’t notice anything was wrong,” she shared, revealing the diagnosis only came after genetic testing. Unfortunately, the condition leads to a rapid decline in cognitive and motor function, with a life expectancy of early to mid-teens.

Gus and Emily are now urging for immediate government support to fund critical treatments, including enzyme therapy and gene replacement, which are still in limited trials in the U.S. “Leni must receive treatment within the next year to have a chance at a normal life,” Emily stressed.

During the segment, viewers were especially emotional when little Leni briefly appeared on screen, toddling onto the set before settling with her parents. Social media quickly flooded with messages of support: “This is one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard,” wrote one viewer. “That poor little girl. No wonder they were in denial.”

Leni’s story has also touched singer Jesy Nelson, who met the toddler earlier this week. Jesy described the meeting as “incredibly emotional,” adding, “Children like Leni deserve every chance at life.”

The Forrester family’s story has captured the hearts of many, but the fight for Leni’s future is far from over. With time running out, Gus and Emily are doing everything they can to ensure their daughter’s survival.
