Martin Frizell, husband of beloved TV presenter Fiona Phillips, has opened up about the heartbreaking progress of her Alzheimer’s, offering a candid look at the reality of caring for someone with the condition.

The nation was stunned when Fiona, a popular former GMTV host, revealed she had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at 61, after initially attributing her symptoms to menopause. She experienced brain fog, anxiety, and a diminishing interest in her marriage, and her parents’ similar struggles added to the devastating news.

As Fiona prepares to release a memoir titled Remember When: My Life With Alzheimer’s later this year, co-authored with Martin, he has shared some of their private moments in her journey.

In an excerpt published by the Daily Mail, Martin explains the challenges of caring for Fiona:
“It is January 2025 as I write this, and Fiona needs a lot of help. She can do things physically, but now struggles to think through the steps,” he shares. From assisting her with simple tasks like showering and brushing her teeth to ensuring she’s dressed properly, Martin provides vital support, even putting toothpaste on her toothbrush each night.
Martin describes Fiona as still fiercely independent, despite her struggle with the disease: “She doesn’t like being told what to do, especially when it comes to brushing her teeth.”
The couple’s love story began at GMTV, where they met and quickly fell in love. After just four weeks of dating, Martin proposed, and they married in Las Vegas in 1997. They have two children together, and Martin made the tough decision to leave his high-profile ITV job last year to care for Fiona full-time.
