Joy Behar made a surprising exit from The View on Tuesday morning, leaving the table ahead of an interview with Carrie Underwood, just one year after publicly criticizing the country music star for performing at Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration.

The incident unfolded after the talk show returned from a commercial break, with Behar and cohost Sara Haines noticeably absent. The remaining panelists interviewed American Idol judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Underwood without Behar. This move, though unusual, came after Behar faced intense backlash from former The View cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck for her comments on Underwood’s performance at Trump’s inauguration.

In early 2025, Behar voiced her opposition to Underwood’s decision to perform at the event, which led to Hasselbeck calling out Behar publicly on social media, accusing her of attacking Underwood. Hasselbeck wrote, “@TheView @JoyVBehar needs to simmer down off my friend” and defended Underwood, calling her “an incredible woman.”
While Behar never used the term “un-American” to describe Underwood, Hasselbeck’s posts caused an uproar online. Despite the tension, the two did not address the incident when Hasselbeck returned to The View earlier this year during Alyssa Farah Griffin’s maternity leave.
The temporary absence of Behar and Haines was later explained as a “production decision” due to the seating arrangement with the three interview subjects. Behar returned to her seat at the table by the end of the broadcast, with The View moderator Whoopi Goldberg mentioning Behar’s appearance on the show’s podcast, Behind the Table, as part of the day’s plans.
