After an illustrious 22-year career at NBC News, Peter Alexander is calling it quits. The beloved anchor, known for his 15 years covering the White House and his eight-year stint as co-anchor of Saturday Today, is stepping away from the network.
While Alexander cites his desire to spend more time with his family, the real reason behind his departure might be far more personal. Sources reveal that Alexander, who has long harbored ambitions for top anchor roles, became frustrated after being overlooked for high-profile positions like the anchor chair at Today and NBC Nightly News. With those roles now filled by others, including Tom Llamas and Hallie Jackson, Alexander is ready for a change.
“I’ve had ambitions for those top roles, but with them all filled, it’s time to take on something new,” Alexander shared, confirming his departure in a heartfelt on-air announcement. “I’ve been away from home more than 80 nights in the past seven months. I want to be there for my daughter and spend time with my family while I still can.”
As Saturday Today anchor, Alexander replaced Craig Melvin in 2018, but with Melvin’s eventual rise to a permanent weekday role, Alexander’s career path at NBC seemed increasingly limited. With no top positions on the horizon, it seems the long-time correspondent is ready for a fresh challenge.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(1442x778:1444x780)/peter-alexander-032826-02-d6256891670944eaa0e1fad1b4415368.jpg)
Sources also revealed that Alexander will be joining MS Now, the network formerly known as MSNBC, taking on a weekday anchor role at 11 a.m. starting this Saturday. While NBC News has yet to comment, colleagues from the Washington Bureau and Today expressed their gratitude for his contributions and friendship in a memo to staff.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/Peter-Alexander-Today-032826-64267d35fe94492b9206225560cef304.jpg)
“Peter has been a trusted presence across NBC News,” wrote Chloe Arensberg, Washington Bureau Chief, and Matt Carluccio, Today executive producer. “We are grateful for his dedication and wish him the best in this new chapter.”
Alexander’s exit marks the end of a notable era at NBC, but for him, it’s a new beginning—one focused on family and pursuing challenges on his own terms. Fans are left wondering: What’s next for this seasoned anchor, and how will his departure impact NBC’s future?
Stay tuned.
