Actress Tamzin Outhwaite has opened up about the emotional journey her family has gone through since her eldest child, Flo, 17, came out as transgender. In an intimate discussion, Tamzin reflected on how the transition has shaped their family and how, despite initial challenges, they have found happiness and acceptance.
Tamzin, 55, who shares two children with ex-husband Tom Ellis, spoke candidly about her family’s journey to understanding and supporting Flo’s transition. In an interview, she explained that Flo first identified as a boy when he was around 10 or 11 years old, but the journey to acceptance wasn’t easy.
“It’s been a long journey, a very long journey, but we’re in a great place now,” Tamzin said, adding that she is “just happy that he’s happy.” Despite the challenges, Tamzin emphasized how proud she is to see Flo thriving and excelling in his life.
In an exclusive conversation on the Parenting Hell podcast, Tamzin revealed that she was initially skeptical about Flo’s decision to transition, recalling, “I would say, don’t be ridiculous. I didn’t say don’t be ridiculous but my mind went, ‘that’s ludicrous.'” However, she stressed the importance of support and open communication in a family, which ultimately led to a much stronger relationship and understanding.
Tamzin acknowledged that, as a parent, it’s not always easy to navigate such a personal transition, especially given the lack of widespread understanding at the time. She credits therapy and consistent family dialogue for helping them all work together during this challenging period.
“Working back from that with talking, family therapy, therapy on Flo’s side as well… I think if you push back on a kid, they’ll want to do the opposite of what their parent says,” she shared.
Tamzin’s relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Tom Child, has also remained strong, despite their split. She revealed that Tom continues to be a central figure in their family life, supporting both Flo and their younger daughter, Marnie, through significant life changes.
As the public discussion around transgender issues continues to grow, Tamzin shared her thoughts on how society’s views are evolving, but also emphasized the importance of respecting each person’s unique experience.
Flo, who Tamzin described as “incredible,” has also developed a passion for acting and comedy writing, and Tamzin couldn’t be more supportive of his talents and ambitions.
