Andrew Lloyd Webber, the legendary composer behind The Phantom of the Opera and Cats, has shared a deeply personal revelation about his battle with alcoholism. In a candid interview, the 78-year-old opened up about his struggles and his decision to seek help after a year and a half of what he calls a “downhill spiral.”

“I am a recovering alcoholic,” Andrew confessed in an interview with The Times, acknowledging that while he tried to keep it a secret, “everybody knows.” The renowned musical theatre icon shared that his addiction reached a breaking point, with his family in a “desperate state” and his wife feeling she “couldn’t go on” any longer.

In a courageous decision, Andrew checked into a rehab facility, but it wasn’t until attending an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting in Switzerland that he began his journey to recovery. He now attends daily AA meetings, whether he’s in London, Hampshire, or New York.

Andrew’s brave revelation comes just days after his brother Julian announced he would begin treatment for prostate cancer, after being diagnosed with the condition. The news follows a year of immense personal loss, including the death of Andrew’s eldest son, Nicholas, from gastric cancer in 2023.

Despite his personal and family struggles, Andrew’s commitment to his health and well-being shines through as he opens up about the life-changing journey he’s embarked on. He is currently focusing on sustaining his health, while also managing his ongoing career and musical projects.

In the interview, Andrew reflected on the support he has received through his recovery, saying that his life is now focused on “healthier habits” and maintaining balance. “This isn’t about a quick fix; it’s about learning healthier habits and building sustainable change,” he said.

Andrew’s story of recovery and resilience, paired with his openness about the impact of alcohol on his life, offers a powerful message of hope for others.
