Coronation Street star Tracy Shaw, known for her iconic role as Maxine Peacock, has revealed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram, the actress, 52, opened up about her diagnosis and the difficult journey ahead, expressing both gratitude and strength as she prepares to face the challenges of her treatment.

The actress disclosed that she will undergo a five-month chemotherapy course before possibly having surgery. In her emotional post, Shaw wrote: “My diagnosis of breast cancer. So the journey begins…” She also expressed solidarity with others who are battling cancer, sending love to everyone experiencing similar struggles. “Love to everyone who is going through this journey, looking forward to hearing from all of you, especially you amazing survivors. Peace.”
The actress explained that she was originally scheduled to have surgery in two weeks. However, after further testing, including the discovery of HER2, a protein that accelerates the growth of cancerous cells, her treatment plan was adjusted. Shaw was advised to begin chemotherapy first, with surgery following later. HER2 is often associated with more aggressive forms of cancer.
Shaw bravely spoke about the emotional toll the diagnosis has taken on her, particularly the loss of her hair, which she admitted had been a particularly tough experience. “It doesn’t mean it’s been easy coming to terms with, and I know it sounds really trivial, but losing my hair,” Shaw shared. “But I am truly grateful that I have this opportunity to be able to hopefully be free from cancer as well.”
Throughout her video, Shaw reflected on the strength she has gained from overcoming many challenges in her life. The actress has been open about her recovery from a variety of addictions, including anorexia, bulimia, alcoholism, and drug addiction. “I have recovered from it all, and I’m here today standing strong,” she said. She also thanked her followers for their concern after she took a step back from social media during Lent to focus on her well-being.
In a particularly touching part of her message, Shaw praised her partner for being her rock throughout this difficult time. “Family means everything to me, and there is one person who has been my rock through it all. Happy birthday to my beautiful wife, you have stood by me when things were tough and reminded me of my strength when I needed it most. I would not be who I am without you.”
Shaw also expressed her gratitude for the support from fans, writing, “I am grateful to everyone who supported me and showed love. To those who doubted me or tried to bring me down, I carry no negativity towards you.” She emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself and finding strength in adversity. “I have already won in the ways that matter most. I have love, I have happiness, and I have stayed true to myself, and that is something no one can ever take away from me.”
The actress’ fans quickly flooded her post with messages of love and support. Many shared their own stories of battling breast cancer, offering encouragement and showing solidarity. One fan wrote, “Sending love to you Tracy, your strength is inspiring,” while another commented, “What a brave and brilliant post. Sending positive vibes and love to you.”
Shaw’s role as Maxine Peacock on Coronation Street was beloved by fans. Her character, who was introduced in 1995 as the friend of Fiona Middleton, played by Angela Griffin, became embroiled in a controversial storyline involving a one-night stand with Fiona’s boyfriend, Steve MacDonald. Maxine’s tragic death at the hands of Richard Hillman, who murdered her with a crowbar, remains one of the most memorable moments in the show’s history.
Shaw’s career extended beyond Coronation Street, as she also released two singles in 1998 and later turned to theater work. However, it was her time on the soap that made her a household name, and her character’s death in 2003 left an indelible mark on fans.
In her recent video, Shaw said she will keep her followers updated on her journey, and has expressed deep gratitude for the support she has received from the medical staff at Royal Berkshire Hospital. “I thank you all and I thank the Royal Berkshire Hospital and everyone who has helped me get to this point,” she said. “I will keep you posted on this journey.”
Shaw’s openness and honesty have resonated with many, and she continues to inspire others in their own battles. “I am so thankful for this community of amazing people and for the opportunity to share my journey,” she said. “This is just the beginning, and I’m ready to face it with strength and positivity.”
