Vernon Kay has firmly stated that his and wife Tess Daly’s daughters, Phoebe and Amber, won’t be following the “nepo baby” path, revealing the strong work ethic they’ve instilled in their children. Speaking candidly in a recent interview, the BBC Radio 2 DJ, 51, opened up about how the family dynamic is shifting as his daughters grow older.
He explained, “Now that Phoebe is 21 and Amber is nearly 17, our relationship with them is changing. We talk about encouraging them to leave the nest and be independent, but we don’t really want them to.”
The couple, who married in 2003, have made sure their girls understand the value of hard work, and Vernon shared that they’ve always encouraged them to “go out and graft.” However, he admitted that it’s hard for parents to see their children grow up and become more independent.
Vernon continued, “I think the biggest lesson Tess and I have taught them is: ‘You’ve got to go out and graft.’” This, he says, is the core message they’ve passed on to their daughters, even though they’re still figuring out what they want to do.
Phoebe, a film production student, has also gained some recognition as an influencer, documenting her enviable lifestyle on social media. Despite this, Vernon remains adamant that his children must build their own careers rather than rely on the fame of their parents.
At 18, Phoebe made her red carpet debut in 2023 at the John Wick: Chapter 4 premiere in London, walking alongside her father. He’s been looking into drama schools for her, hoping she will combine her interests in acting and business.
Their bond also includes unforgettable father-daughter moments. For Phoebe’s A-level celebration, Vernon treated her to a luxury getaway in Ibiza. The trip, complete with stays at high-end resorts and visits to exclusive clubs, highlighted their special relationship.
Vernon and Phoebe have also been spotted at glamorous events like the Vanity Fair EE Rising Star Party, where they rubbed shoulders with top celebrities, including Emily Atack and Katherine Ryan.
While some may expect Phoebe to follow in her parents’ footsteps, Vernon’s main priority remains to ensure she, and Amber, forge their own paths, grounded in hard work and determination.
