In a light-hearted exchange on The Late Show, former President Barack Obama had a little fun with Stephen Colbert’s not-so-serious presidential aspirations. Colbert, who has been known to crack jokes about running for the highest office in the land, couldn’t resist poking fun at the idea once again — and Obama was ready to bite.
When Colbert playfully mused about the possibility of running for president, Obama took the bait with a wry smile. “The bar is low,” Obama said, offering a nod to the state of politics in recent years. “I think you could do better than some of the people we’ve seen,” he added, slyly alluding to the colorful characters who’ve held the position before. Colbert’s comedic timing was on point, as he responded with his usual witty charm, turning the lighthearted moment into a comedic goldmine.
But let’s not get too excited — Obama wasn’t exactly endorsing Colbert for a 2028 run (yet). His comments were more in the realm of a joke than a serious political endorsement. After all, with his biting humor, it’s easy to forget that Obama is still one of the most beloved political figures of our time. Still, he managed to throw a little shade in the process — and it’s clear he enjoys Colbert’s comedic take on politics.
For Colbert, though, this moment may have been more than just a quick laugh. After all, he’s a master of the late-night TV world, but who wouldn’t want to see him take a shot at running for office? And with Obama’s words — even though they were laced with humor — it’s safe to say Colbert would have no trouble keeping us entertained in the Oval Office.
So, Stephen, if you do decide to take the plunge into the political realm, at least you have the support of a former president who thinks you’d “do better than some of the people we’ve seen” — and that, my friends, is a huge endorsement in today’s political climate.
Will we see Colbert in the White House in the future? Probably not. But one thing’s for sure: his ability to make us laugh about it will keep us coming back for more.
