The feature-length documentary, produced by ITN Productions, offers an exclusive look inside the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) in El Salvador, a maximum-security facility that plays a crucial role in the country’s violent war on gangs. Madeley, 69, will explore the harsh conditions of the prison and delve deep into the realities of life behind bars.

Richard said: 'I was genuinely thrilled to be asked to front this film for 5. It's not every day you're given the chance to step inside a place as extraordinary and talked about as CECOT'

Viewers will get an unprecedented look inside this colossal prison, with Richard speaking directly to the inmates who live under one of the world’s strictest regimes, where daily life is dictated by unimaginable limitations. In addition, he will interview the guards who run the facility around the clock.

While Murder Row focuses on the prison itself, the documentary also explores the impact of CECOT on the surrounding urban areas plagued by gang violence. Richard takes viewers on a journey to understand the prison’s wider societal effects and the consequences of such an extreme security system.

“I was genuinely thrilled to be asked to front this film,” said Madeley. “It’s not every day you’re given the chance to step inside a place as extraordinary and talked about as CECOT. What struck me immediately was the sheer scale of it, and the untold stories that unfold inside.”

The documentary reveals chilling details about prison life. Inside CECOT, over 80 inmates are crammed into concrete cells, sleeping on metal bunks stacked four high. The environment is brutal: lights remain on 24 hours a day, prisoners are stripped down to their boxer shorts, and there are no family visits or rehabilitative programs. It’s a place that many claim is built on fear and punishment, rather than reform.

“This access was a tantalizing prospect,” says Guy Davies, Consultant Editor for Commissioning 5. “Richard is a first-class journalist, and we’re excited to have him bring us this compelling and unique journey inside one of the most secretive prisons in the world.”

Madeley’s career has spanned more than 40 years, from his days co-hosting This Morning with wife Judy Finnigan to his recent stint on Good Morning Britain. Known for his fearless approach to hard-hitting stories, this documentary promises to show a side of Richard Madeley we rarely see.

Will this brutal prison system prove to be an effective solution for gang violence, or does it raise deeper ethical questions? Tune in to find out!
