Kate Garraway was spotted getting close to her broadcaster friend Liam Halligan on Friday, raising eyebrows as the two seem to be growing closer after many years of friendship. The Good Morning Britain presenter, who tragically lost her husband Derek Draper to complications from Covid-19 in 2024, has recently formed a close bond with Liam, a relationship that’s been blossoming since both found themselves single in recent months.

Liam, a 56-year-old award-winning journalist, has been open about the new dynamic in his life. He and Kate have known each other for over 20 years, and he was also a close friend of Derek. Now, as he prepares for a 300km charity bike ride with his cycling partner Serge Kogan, the two were spotted together again, with Kate supporting him ahead of the challenge. Liam shared on social media, “It’s today! London-to-Paris in 24 hours, 300km, on a tandem.”

The duo has recently spent more time together, including during a night out in Saffron Walden, where Liam performed with his band, The Hooligans, at The Railway Arms pub. Kate was seen smiling and cosying up to Liam in photos shared by locals, sparking speculation about their growing closeness.

Speaking candidly on Talk TV with Mark Dolan, Liam confirmed that the two were indeed close friends but noted that it was still “early days” and “we’ll see what happens.” Despite the chemistry between them, Liam, who is separated from his partner Lucy Ward, mentioned that he and Kate were still navigating this new phase of their friendship.

One source close to the situation shared with the Daily Mail: “Kate and Liam have been spending time together with their close circle of friends. Liam makes Kate laugh, and it’s clear they enjoy each other’s company. While Kate doesn’t know if it will evolve into something more, it’s been lovely to see her smile again after everything she’s been through.”

Kate, who recently appeared on Celebrity Traitors on the BBC, has been vocal about how transformative the experience was, particularly in helping her cope with her grief. Though still grieving the loss of Derek, Kate seems to have found solace in Liam’s company. A friend of hers added: “Kate has been through so much since Derek’s death, and it’s really tough for her. But it’s heartwarming to see her happy again. They have a special connection, and it’s lovely to see her smiling.”

As for the future, only time will tell what happens between Kate and Liam, but for now, it’s clear they are enjoying each other’s company. They both share a deep history, having been friends for over two decades, and the bond between them continues to grow stronger.
