At around 8:30 a.m. on that Wednesday, Today co-anchor Craig Melvin announced that Savannah had left for the day but would return the following morning. Meanwhile, Mrs. Nintzel, who was holding up a handmade sign to cheer on her former student, was interviewed live on the Plaza. Despite not being able to meet in person, Savannah expressed her gratitude on Instagram, posting a photo of Mrs. Nintzel holding the sign, which featured throwback photos from Guthrie’s high school years.

Savannah wrote, “Thank you for coming,” alongside the photo, acknowledging the teacher’s heartfelt tribute.

No explanation was given for Guthrie’s abrupt exit on Wednesday, but she returned to the Today show in good spirits the following day, where she co-anchored alongside Willie Geist. Savannah has recently returned to the show after taking a leave of absence following the ongoing search for her mother, Nancy Guthrie, who was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona, in February 2026.

In a previous interview, Savannah shared her decision to return to work, saying, “It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness, and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not. But I can’t not come back because it’s my family.” She went on to explain, “My joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer.”

Savannah’s return marks an important step in her journey through these challenging times, and her ability to find moments of joy continues to inspire viewers.
