Jesy Nelson, the Little Mix singer, has been a fierce advocate for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) awareness ever since her twins, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, were diagnosed with the devastating condition. Now, thanks to her tireless campaigning, a groundbreaking study will soon begin in England to screen 755,000 newborns for SMA as part of their routine heel-prick blood tests. 💉✨
The initiative, spearheaded by scientists from the University of Oxford, aims to assess whether SMA screening should become a standard part of post-birth health checks. With SMA leading to progressive muscle weakness, breathing problems, and joint complications, early detection and treatment can dramatically improve the quality of life for affected babies.
🔬 “This study is a game-changer,” says Professor Laurent Servais from Oxford. “It’s an opportunity to diagnose SMA early, which can significantly change the trajectory of the disease.”:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2)/Jesy-Nelson-Twins-020426-999bab4252374c0aac681a07df01e461.jpg)
The study, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), is set to start in August 2026. It will run across seven NHS newborn screening labs, covering a vast portion of England, and will ultimately influence decisions by the UK National Screening Committee.
Jesy, whose twins were diagnosed in May 2025, continues to push for this essential screening, urging the government to make SMA part of the standard newborn blood spot test. Her dedication has already begun to make waves, potentially saving countless lives and ensuring every family has access to critical early treatment.
🌟 “Early diagnosis is everything,” says Giles Lomax, CEO of SMA UK. “This study brings us closer to a future where no child misses that vital window for life-changing treatment.”
The study will proceed in phases, comparing outcomes between babies who are screened for SMA and those who are not. The results are expected by 2031, but for now, Jesy’s fight is already lighting the way for a brighter future for thousands of families. 🌈
