After two years of grieving her late husband Derek Draper, Kate Garraway appears to be embracing happiness again. The Good Morning Britain presenter, 59, has reportedly formed a close bond with long-time acquaintance Liam Halligan, 57, who revealed there is a “definite spark” between them as their fledgling romance continues to grow.

The presenter, 59, tragically lost her husband Derek Draper to complications from Covid-19 in January 2024, and has formed a close friendship with Liam, who she has known for 20 years (pictured with Derek in 2019)

The British economist and journalist, who has known Kate for decades, admitted that despite working in different parts of the media, they share much in common, from a sharp sense of humour to similar outlooks on life. “It’s early days, but there’s a real connection,” Halligan said, recalling recent moments together, including Kate cheering him on during the Duchenne Dash charity cycle ride to Paris last weekend.

Fans first spotted the pair enjoying a cosy night out in Liam’s hometown of Saffron Walden, Essex, and rumours intensified after the father-of-three performed with his band while Kate watched. Observers noted the couple’s easy laughter and subtle displays of affection, signalling a gentle, unexpected new beginning for the presenter.

Halligan, speaking candidly in his Spectator column and on Mark Dolan’s Talk TV show, admitted he was “flabbergasted” by the sudden attention from the showbiz media. “Nobody wanted to hear about market meltdowns, and now I’m being asked about Kate,” he said, acknowledging the unusual spotlight on their personal lives.

Kate has yet to comment publicly, though insiders say she is “giddy” and enjoying the renewed sense of joy, even while continuing to cherish Derek’s memory. “She will never stop loving Derek and is still grieving, but she is finding a way to be happy,” a source told the Mail on Sunday.

Halligan also revealed that their friendship blossomed over recent years after both unexpectedly became single. “We became good friends in recent months,” he said. “It’s lovely to see her smiling again. There’s much more laughter than before, and that’s a wonderful thing to witness.”

While it remains early in their journey, the chemistry between Kate and Liam has not gone unnoticed. Their connection is quietly growing, and friends and family are reportedly thrilled to see the presenter opening her heart once more.
