Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley has opened up about the pivotal moments early in his relationship with Judy Finnigan — and the concerns that prompted him to take a reflective trip to Greece. Speaking on the On The Mend podcast with Matt Willis, Richard detailed how he faced a significant life decision while both he and Judy were divorced and navigating blended family dynamics.
According to Richard, Judy, who had twin sons Dan and Tom from her first marriage, was clear that she “came as a three-pack” and worried whether he truly understood the responsibilities of becoming a stepfather. “I didn’t want to say airily and with super-confidence, ‘Oh, yeah, it’ll be fine,’” he recalled. “I needed to know I could deliver and that I meant it.”
To carefully consider his feelings, Richard traveled alone to Greece for a two-week retreat, a period of deep contemplation about his future and his relationship with Judy. “I wasn’t rushing,” he explained, “but I didn’t want to make a mistake.” The time away allowed him to reflect deeply before returning ready to embrace the new family structure.
Once back, Richard joined Judy and her sons on a trial stay in Cornwall, renting a cottage for the four of them. The trip turned out to be “fantastic” and “sealed it,” he said, paving the way for a happy and stable blended household.
Richard and Judy, who married in 1986, went on to have two children together, Chloe and Jack, and are now grandparents to five. Last year, Richard also opened up about their current living arrangements, explaining that he sometimes sleeps separately from Judy to allow her uninterrupted rest during busy broadcasting periods. “I wouldn’t think of waking Judy early — you do not mess with her sleep,” he joked, showing the enduring care and respect at the heart of their long marriage.
