Every Tiny Step Feels Like a Miracle: Jesy Nelson’s 1-Year-Old Twin Girls Sit Up and Enjoy Their First Meals While Battling SMA Type 1

Former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson, 34, has shared an emotional update that has left fans reaching for the tissues. Her 1-year-old twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, recently hit a major developmental milestone — despite their ongoing battle with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1).

Taking to Instagram, Jesy proudly revealed that her little girls had eaten in their specialised feeding chairs for the very first time — a moment that had the doting mum-of-two in tears. In a heartwarming video, both babies can be seen safely strapped into their new high chairs, complete with extra neck support and waist straps, happily enjoying pureed food while beaming for the camera. Jesy even teased Ocean: “Excuse me, you’re supposed to eat it, not spit it out,” before turning her attention to Story, capturing every adorable moment.

The milestone is especially poignant given the twins’ severe and incurable genetic condition, which weakens their muscles and makes everyday tasks a challenge. Jesy has been candid about the family’s journey, sharing the heartbreak of their SMA1 diagnosis back in January and the struggles of adjusting to leg splints, feeding tubes, and physiotherapy sessions designed to support their movement and breathing.

In a recent highlight of their progress, Jesy revealed that Story said “muma” for the very first time, an achievement that had her bursting with joy. Sharing a video of the moment, the singer cheered: “Yeahhhhhh! Yesss clever girl. Storyyy good girl, you’re such a clever girl. Wow well done. Yeah do it again.” She captioned the post: “My heart is so full.”

Despite doctors’ warnings that the twins may face serious feeding, walking, and breathing challenges, Jesy is relishing every small victory, helping strengthen their legs with gentle stretches and celebrating each new achievement. Beyond caring for her daughters, she has also committed herself to raising awareness about SMA1, ensuring that other parents know they are not alone in their journey.

Jesy previously said: “If talking about this helps one family feel seen, then it’s worth it.” And with these heartwarming milestones, her twins’ journey continues to inspire thousands around the world.
