Renowned British actor Rupert Everett has opened up about his six-year affair with TV presenter Paula Yates, who was married to Bob Geldof at the time. In his 2004 memoir Red Carpets and Banana Skin and a new interview with The Guardian, Everett, 67, described Yates as a “kindred spirit,” bonded through a shared love for drama and excitement.
Paula, who tragically died at 41 from a heroin overdose in 2000, was married to Geldof from 1986, with their relationship often shadowed by rumors of infidelity. Despite identifying as gay, Rupert admitted to being immediately drawn to Yates, calling her “adorable and beautiful” and “a fragile rock—tough yet vulnerable.”
Reflecting on the time they spent together, Rupert said that being in relationships with women offered him a sense of belonging: “Being straight was heaven, because you fitted in so well,” recalling a dinner with actor Gordon Jackson and his wife that epitomized domestic normalcy. Everett has also had affairs with other high-profile women, including Bianca Jagger, Susan Sarandon, and Béatrice Dalle, though he confessed his restlessness: *”I just wanted to have more relationships… No one was ever enough.” 
Rupert’s perspective shifted sixteen years ago when he met Brazilian accountant Henrique, with whom he married in 2024. The couple moved to Wiltshire in 2018, living with Rupert’s mother until her death last year. He reflected on marriage as a legal contract in the past, once dismissing it as “a waste of time” and “beyond tragic,” yet admitted that relationships need to breathe, evolve, and transform daily.
