Fans of Robson Green won’t have to wait long to see him back on screen. After bidding farewell to Grantchester, the TV favourite is taking on a bold new role in BBC One’s The Northumbria Mysteries, a gripping crime drama set against the dramatic landscapes of Northumberland.
But this time, Robson isn’t the detective. He steps into the shoes of Joe Ruby—a charming ex-convict and gambler whose underworld connections prove surprisingly useful in solving complex crimes across the north-east of England.
A Classic Odd-Couple Partnership
Joe teams up with the ice-cool, Oxford-educated DI Rose O’Connell, played by Liz White (Life on Mars, Call the Midwife, Unforgotten). Robson teased:
“They’re this really unusual, likeable oddball pairing, slowly discovering the connection between them—and learning what to do with it as the series unfolds.”
Their starkly different worlds collide in a thrilling series of investigations that will test, frustrate, and ultimately surprise both characters as they crack each case.
A Northumberland Backdrop Like No Other
Filmed across the sweeping Northumberland coastline and historic market towns, the drama promises stunning visuals. From Hadrian’s Wall to Bamburgh Castle, Robson says the landscape itself becomes a “principal character” in the series.
“They’re absolutely astonishing and give us all comfort when we’re there. It will really help the drama come alive,” he told BBC Look North.
Star-Studded Cast & Production
Robson Green leads a talented ensemble including Simon Callow, Kevin Whately, Gurjeet Singh, and Chris Gascoyne. Executive producer Lesley Douglas shared:
“We could not be happier to have Robson bring Joe Ruby to life in the magnificent backdrop of Northumberland. It’s been a real labour of love.”
