Laura Jarrett, co-anchor of Saturday TODAY, recently reflected on the pivotal choices that led her from law to television, while balancing family life with husband Tony Balkissoon and their two young children.
Jarrett made history reporting the guilty verdict in the Donald Trump hush money trial live on air, covering all 34 counts. As the first former U.S. president convicted of a crime, the moment cemented her reputation as a trusted legal analyst.
Looking back, Jarrett remembers the moment she decided to leave a secure career in law to pursue her dream. “I was a six-year law associate considering partnership, but I realized I wouldn’t enjoy the path long-term,” she shared. At 30, she knew the timing was critical: jump before having kids or risk staying stuck.
Without TV experience, she began knocking on doors at local news stations, willing to start from the bottom. “They said, ‘No thanks,’ but I kept hustling,” she recalls. CNN eventually took her, assigning her 4 a.m. slots that taught her resilience. “Even though no one was watching, I was thrilled,” Jarrett says.
After six years at CNN, she joined NBC News as a senior legal correspondent in January 2023 and seven months later became co-host of Saturday TODAY alongside Peter Alexander. “It’s been worth it. Ten years, 375 interviews, incredible experiences — I still feel lucky,” she says.
Balancing career and family, Jarrett praises her husband Tony, whom she met at Harvard in 2008. The couple share son James, 4, and daughter June, 13 months. Jarrett recalls the early challenges: “James was so hard — cried constantly. I couldn’t wait for maternity leave to end,” she laughs. Today, she enjoys the chaos of parenting while working.
James, now curious and energetic, loves math and puzzles, while June is “completely enthralled” by her brother. Jarrett cherishes these moments, noting that managing work and family is a gift.
From living at the DOJ to guiding viewers through historic trials, Laura Jarrett continues to inspire as a legal analyst, anchor, and devoted mother, showing that bold career choices can coexist with a fulfilling family life.
