Wedding bells and tiny giggles stole the spotlight at Al Roker’s daughter Leila’s early May wedding, and the TODAY weatherman couldn’t resist sharing one of the cutest moments ever. During the June 1 broadcast, Roker revealed how his nearly 3-year-old granddaughter Sky, slated to be the ring bearer, stole hearts even while missing her big moment.
“Sky woke up with a fever, so we had to give her some Motrin,” Roker told co-hosts Jenna Bush Hager, Savannah Guthrie, and Craig Melvin on TODAY. “Her dad, Wes, carried her down the aisle while Courtney tossed the flower petals.” The image of a very sleepy Sky being carried by her dad quickly melted hearts. “Everybody went ‘Awww,’” Roker said proudly, recalling the reaction from family and friends.
The granddaughter, daughter of Roker’s oldest child Courtney, later found her second wind on the dance floor, much to the delight of the family. “She woke up later and joined in the dancing,” Melvin added, with Roker confirming the adorable moment. Despite missing her ring-bearing duties, Sky charmed everyone in attendance and proved that sometimes the smallest guests leave the biggest impressions.
The milestone event also included precautionary measures due to a recent hantavirus outbreak. Roker revealed that after traveling from France for the wedding, he was asked by the CDC to get tested as a precaution — good news followed as all tests returned clear. “It was a happy day all around,” Roker laughed.
Al Roker, 71, has been a staple on TODAY since 1996, and 2026 marks his 30th year with the beloved morning show. The meteorologist also addressed long-standing retirement rumors earlier this year. “I haven’t thought about retirement. I love what I do. I feel good. I love this job. I love doing it. At some point I guess I won’t be, but I don’t feel like that’s anytime soon,” Roker shared.
The wedding was a multi-generational celebration. Leila’s nuptials included family members of all ages, and Roker’s daughter Sky’s memorable participation highlighted the event in ways no one could have predicted. Even small hiccups like a fever became moments of joy, turning into heartwarming stories shared with the TODAY audience.
Roker’s family also includes his wife Deborah Roberts and children from previous marriages, all of whom joined in the celebration. The meteorologist emphasized the importance of cherishing these fleeting, magical moments with loved ones.
The TODAY broadcast captured the love, laughter, and unexpected charm of family gatherings, reminding viewers that even minor setbacks — like a sleepy ring bearer — can turn into treasured memories. Fans and viewers praised Roker for sharing the intimate, humorous, and touching story, which perfectly illustrated the joys of family milestones.
Sky’s brief nap during the ceremony didn’t overshadow her impact; rather, it amplified the sweetness of the day, showing how family, love, and even tiny imperfections make celebrations unforgettable. Roker’s storytelling brought the audience into the personal, emotional, and charming details that make family events truly special.
In the midst of celebrating 30 years on TODAY, Al Roker continues to balance his professional life with heartwarming family moments. The granddaughter’s antics at the wedding reinforced the importance of cherishing small, fleeting moments of joy, leaving viewers both touched and entertained.
As the family continues to celebrate milestones, Roker’s anecdotes serve as a reminder of the enduring charm and warmth of familial bonds. Whether through tiny giggles, sleepy ring bearers, or dance-floor antics, these moments are cherished memories that resonate far beyond the wedding day.
