Fans of Sir Rod Stewart were left stunned and disappointed after the 81-year-old music legend was forced to cancel a highly anticipated concert just hours before he was due on stage in Chula Vista, California.
The rock icon was set to continue his One Last Time tour on Friday night (June 12), but the performance was abruptly called off after doctors advised him to rest following a sudden health setback.
In an official statement shared on his behalf, Rod’s team confirmed the difficult decision, revealing he had been diagnosed with an acute upper respiratory infection that developed into laryngitis.
“Rod Stewart very regretfully has had to cancel his show tonight in Chula Vista, California,” the statement read. “He travelled to the venue and made every effort to perform, but on the advice of his doctors… he is unable to take to the stage this evening.”
Despite arriving at the venue and attempting to push through, the decision was ultimately made to prioritise his recovery.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(725x371:727x373)/rod-stewart-2025-american-music-awards-060525-1-1aed28c8e57b4fd89377965e5b072d3c.jpg)
Later, Rod addressed fans directly from the empty stage via Instagram, sharing a photo of the set being dismantled behind him as the reality of the cancellation sank in.
“Following treatment, I’m feeling much better, but my voice is not,” he wrote. “I’m very disappointed and sincerely apologise… I did everything I could to make the show happen.”
He also reassured fans that he is hoping to reschedule the performance once he has fully recovered.
The legendary singer is now expected to return to the stage on Monday (June 15) at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, pending further recovery.
This is not the first time Stewart has had to step back from performances in recent weeks. In May, he also cancelled two Las Vegas shows at Caesars Palace on medical advice, citing a sinus infection and vocal strain while undergoing vocal rest.
Understandably, the repeated cancellations have sparked concern among fans, with many sending messages of support and wishing him a speedy recovery.
At 81, Rod Stewart continues to tour at an extraordinary pace – but this latest setback is a reminder of the physical toll even rock legends face on the road.
