The legendary Tonight Show host, who has been married to Mavis since 1980, spoke candidly about the question during an appearance on Maria Shriver’s Life Above the Noise podcast, calling it one of the most unexpected comments he has received while navigating a deeply personal chapter of his life.

Mavis Leno’s diagnosis was publicly revealed in 2024, when Jay was also granted conservatorship over her estate amid her declining health. Since then, the comedian has remained firmly by her side, describing his role as a caregiver as something he simply sees as fulfilling a promise made decades ago.

Reflecting on the conversation that surprised him, Leno recalled being asked if he would consider moving on romantically. His response was immediate and firm — pointing out that he is still married and sees no separation between commitment and circumstance.

“You take a vow when you get married, and people are stunned, they’re shocked when you live up to it,” Leno said.

He went on to share a striking moment from his personal life, explaining that someone once asked him directly if he would “get a girlfriend now.” Leno said he replied simply: “No. I have a girlfriend. I’m married.”

The comedian emphasized that, for him, marriage is a commitment that does not change with hardship, adding that he and Mavis are “in this together.” He reflected on how modern expectations have shifted, noting that what used to be considered normal devotion is now often viewed as unusual.

“I haven’t really been tested in my life… I’m glad I’m passing the test,” he said, adding that he believes he is simply doing what he made a commitment to do.
