British gardening icon Alan Titchmarsh has opened up in a rare and heartfelt reflection on ageing, health, and gratitude — telling fans that “every day is a bonus” as he reflects on life, loss, and perspective.
The beloved Gardeners’ World and Ground Force star shared that his outlook on life has been shaped deeply by the passing of his father, and by the awareness that time is never guaranteed.Speaking candidly, Titchmarsh said he feels “very lucky” to still be active and healthy at 77, adding that people often assume he has undergone major medical changes — something he quickly dismissed with humour.
“I’m very lucky; nothing has been replaced,” he said. “People keep saying I’ve had new knees. I haven’t — they’re the original ones.”
The veteran presenter reflected on his father, who died at just 62, saying it changed the way he views each passing year..jpg)
“You don’t know what’s around the corner,” he explained. “My dad died of a heart attack at 62. I’ve now lived 15 years longer than he did. It makes you realise every day is a bonus.”
Despite the reflective tone, Titchmarsh made it clear he has no intention of slowing down, insisting he still feels energised and committed to his work and gardening passion.
Away from health reflections, he also shared his typically practical humour about gardening struggles, including his long search for effective ways to deal with slugs and snails. After trying multiple methods over the years, he admitted only one solution has consistently worked for him — copper rings placed around plants.
“I’ve tried almost everything,” he joked, listing common home remedies, before concluding that most simply don’t work in real gardens.
The comments have struck a chord with fans, many praising the TV favourite for his honesty, humility, and grounded outlook on life.
At a time when many public figures shy away from discussing ageing, Titchmarsh’s words stand out for their simplicity — a reminder to slow down, appreciate the present, and value each day as it comes 🌿
