Stephen Colbert delivered a heartfelt and emotional tribute to his wife, Evelyn McGee-Colbert, as she was honored with the inaugural Evelyn McGee Colbert Visionary Tribute Award at a Montclair Film event in New York City.
The special ceremony took place on June 10 at Joe’s Pub, where Evelyn was celebrated for her long-standing commitment to Montclair Film and her impactful work in leadership and the arts, surrounded by family, friends, and industry peers.
By her side was her husband of 33 years, former Late Show host Stephen Colbert, 62, who stepped on stage to warm applause before kissing his wife and beginning his speech with a simple but powerful line: “I am so proud to be Evie’s husband.”
He went on to express admiration for her dedication, saying he was deeply moved by the recognition she received and joking about how she often avoids the spotlight despite her influence. :max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/colbert-2-f6dbcdd2c29843e9abb98e46ab456076.jpg)
Colbert also paid tribute to Evelyn’s late parents, noting how proud they would be of their daughter’s achievements and lifelong commitment to community and service.
As he spoke, Evelyn appeared emotional, smiling and holding back tears while listening to his words.
“Evie dedicated her life to nonprofit work, the arts, and serving others,” he said. “I know more than anyone in this universe, your mother and father are looking down right now, so proud of you.”
He ended his speech simply: “They love you, and so do I.”
The event also featured tributes from several public figures, including New Jersey Governor Mickie Sherrill, Lt. Gov. Dr. Dale Caldwell, and Montclair Film leaders. Video messages were also sent by Steve Carell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jon Bon Jovi, Jimmy Fallon, and Conan O’Brien, all praising Evelyn’s grace and impact.
Evelyn also delivered her own humorous acceptance speech, joking about feeling overwhelmed and comparing the moment to “her Sally Field moment,” adding a playful tone to the emotional evening.
She also teased Stephen during her remarks, recalling their early years and joking about how long it took for him to “be cool enough” to date her, sparking laughter from the audience.
The couple, who met in 1990, wrote letters before their first date in December that year and married in October 1993. They now share three children: Madeleine, Peter, and John.
Over the years, Evelyn has made several appearances on The Late Show, often playfully teasing her husband on air — something Colbert has said audiences love.
