Dame Joanna Lumley has proved age is just a number as she celebrated her 80th birthday with her trademark style, wit, and a positive outlook that would make even the most glamorous fashionista green with envy.
The British icon, beloved for her breakout role as Purdey in The New Avengers and her unforgettable Patsy Stone in Absolutely Fabulous, says she finds the fuss over her milestone birthday “hilarious” and has no plans to slow down.
“People make a huge deal out of turning 80, as if something catastrophic happens overnight,” Joanna laughs. “I feel incredibly lucky to be alive, still working, and still learning. Honestly, I’ll never be a bore!”
True to form, Joanna marked the occasion in full swing on the set of Tim Burton’s Netflix hit Wednesday, playing Grandma Hester Frump in outrageous makeup and a towering wig while filming in Ireland.
“It’s completely normal for people like me to be 80 and still working, still sharp, and still kicking,” she says. “When I was young, anyone over 60 was considered past it!”
Despite her hectic schedule, Joanna treasures quiet moments at home with her husband of more than 40 years, conductor Stephen Barlow, and their time at their Scottish cottage. “When life gets overwhelming, I escape to the hills and valleys, listen to the river, and watch the hawks soar,” she explains.
Family is close to her heart, with son Jamie, 58, and his wife Teresa, along with granddaughters Alice, 23, and Emily, 22, forming Joanna’s loving circle.
On the topic of ageing, Joanna is refreshingly candid. “I think about dying every day because I think about living every day. Birth, life, death — it’s all part of the same beautiful story,” she says.
Her compassion extends to friends facing difficult times, including journalist Esther Rantzen, 85, who is campaigning for assisted dying in the UK. Joanna supports the choice, saying: “I’d love to have the option available if life becomes unbearable — it’s a comforting thought.”
Yet for now, Joanna is focused on joy, laughter, and new projects. “I shall clearly make 90, and I can’t wait!” she beams. “Life is far too wonderful to sit still.”
From London to Scotland, from Patsy to Grandma Hester, Joanna Lumley remains a shining example of living life fully — proving that style, humour, and heart only get better with age.
