Sports analyst Pat McAfee and his wife Samantha have shared joyful news with fans after welcoming the newest member of their family — a baby boy with a name that immediately captured attention.
The couple announced the arrival of their son, Midas Robert McAfee, in a heartfelt post on X, revealing that the newborn entered the world on Friday, May 22, following an emergency C-section. The baby joins his older sister Mackenzie, who is now three years old.
McAfee, 39, explained that Samantha’s pregnancy was considered high-risk and became even more complicated when she developed severe preeclampsia. As a result, baby Midas arrived four weeks earlier than expected and was taken to the NICU shortly after birth to help with the transition into the world.
The former NFL player, ESPN personality and host of The Pat McAfee Show admitted it was an emotional experience seeing his newborn connected to so many medical devices.
Despite the frightening circumstances, McAfee shared that doctors were pleased with Midas’ lung development, allowing the family to experience those precious first moments together.
The proud father said they were able to enjoy immediate skin-to-skin contact, countless kisses and plenty of newborn cuddles before the baby was transferred for specialized care.
For the next 36 hours, McAfee found himself moving between the NICU and Samantha’s hospital room as she recovered from surgery.
He praised his wife for her strength throughout the ordeal, describing her recovery from the C-section as nothing short of inspiring.
McAfee also expressed his gratitude publicly, saying he would make sure their children always understood how much Samantha sacrificed for them.
The baby’s unique first name carries a special significance for the sports star.
According to McAfee, he had dreamed of naming a future son Midas ever since high school after learning about Greek mythology from one of his teachers.
He explained that growing up without much money made the legendary story of everything turning to gold especially appealing to him.
However, McAfee stressed that the name represents much more than wealth.
He said he hopes Midas will grow into someone who treats people well, contributes positively to society and works hard to help others achieve their own version of success and happiness.
The newborn’s middle name, Robert, was chosen in honor of Samantha’s late father, whom the family lost several years ago.
McAfee described the tribute as a way of ensuring his father-in-law’s memory continues to live on through the newest member of the family.
Adding a lighthearted note at the end of his announcement, McAfee joked that his three-day-old son had already experienced an impressive list of major events.
According to the proud dad, baby Midas has already watched what he called the closest Indianapolis 500 ever, witnessed the Vegas Golden Knights’ dramatic Game 3 comeback and even enjoyed a viewing of Top Gun: Maverick.
For McAfee and Samantha, the road to welcoming their son may have been filled with unexpected challenges, but the couple says they couldn’t be more grateful to finally have baby Midas safely in their arms.
