Craig Melvin may have stepped into one of television’s most coveted roles when he succeeded Hoda Kotb as a co-anchor of Today, but according to the broadcaster himself, his most meaningful role began long before he took a seat beside Savannah Guthrie. 
On January 13, 2025, viewers watched the first Today broadcast without Hoda Kotb at the anchor desk following her departure after 17 years. Stepping into the role was longtime NBC journalist Craig Melvin, who officially became Savannah Guthrie’s new co-anchor while continuing his duties on Today Third Hour alongside Al Roker, Sheinelle Jones and Dylan Dreyer.
For regular viewers, Craig’s promotion felt like a natural next step in a career that has been decades in the making.
His journey began at NBC affiliate WIS-TV, where he worked as the station’s “Our Generation Reporter.” Over the years, his dedication and determination helped him climb through the ranks to become one of NBC’s most recognizable faces.

The journalist shares two children with his wife, fellow broadcaster Lindsey Czarniak, whom he married in 2011.

Three years into their marriage, they welcomed their first child, Delano Melvin. The name carries special significance, as Delano is also Craig’s middle name.
Two years later, on November 5, 2016, the couple’s daughter Sybil Ann Melvin, affectionately known as “Sibby,” joined the family. 
Over the years, Craig has frequently shared glimpses of family life, from matching pajamas and birthday celebrations to everyday moments spent together.
His love for fatherhood even inspired a major career milestone away from broadcasting.
In May 2024, Craig released a children’s book titled I’m Proud of You, inspired by the lessons he learned as a parent.
While promoting the book on Today, Craig sat down for a memorable interview with Delano, who took on the role of interviewer.
During the touching conversation, Craig revealed just how profoundly fatherhood had changed his outlook on life.
“When I wake up in the morning, part of the reason I work so hard is for you and your sister,” he told his son.
“Part of my motivation is to make the two of you proud.”
He then reflected on the years before becoming a father.
“It’s funny because before you two came along, I was kind of beep-bopping through life, and then all of a sudden, I’m trying to be a good example.”
