During the Wednesday, June 24 episode of the NBC daytime show, Bush Hager opened up about the quirky habit, explaining that Hal sometimes licks her face to express his love.

According to the television host, the unusual behavior likely comes from the family’s cats.

“He likes to lick my forehead like a cat. We have cats,” Bush Hager said with a laugh before quickly adding, “And not on my mouth—you guys, don’t get all freaky.”

Her co-host, Sheinelle Jones, joked that the behavior might seem more understandable if Hal were a toddler, although she admitted she still wouldn’t be thrilled about being licked.

Bush Hager went on to explain that Hal usually licks her on the cheek instead.

“Like he’s a little cub,” Jones observed, before asking, “And you just let him?”

“Well, no,” Bush Hager replied with a smile. “I say, ‘Please don’t lick me. Please stop licking me.’ But sometimes it doesn’t work.”

Despite repeatedly asking him to stop, Bush Hager admitted she understands where the sweet gesture comes from.

“He loves me, what can I say?” she said.

Hal is the youngest of Bush Hager’s three children with her husband, Henry Chase Hager. The couple are also parents to daughters Mila, 13, and Poppy, 10.

Last September, when Hal celebrated his sixth birthday, Bush Hager marked the occasion with a heartfelt tribute on Instagram.

Among the photos she shared was a touching image of the pair enjoying a boat ride together. In the snapshot, the proud mom leaned down to kiss her son, who was wearing a small life jacket.

She captioned the photo, “Happiest to my son! My sun 🌞.”

Earlier that same month, Bush Hager also celebrated another important milestone in Hal’s life as he officially began kindergarten.

During the September 4 episode of Today with Jenna & Friends, she reflected on the excitement of seeing all three of her children start a new school year. Mila entered seventh grade, Poppy began fourth grade, and Hal headed off for his very first day of kindergarten.

“Kinder, seventh grade and fourth grade, which I can’t believe. But they had such a good day!” she wrote.

Bush Hager also admitted that missing some of those milestone moments as a working parent isn’t always easy.

“You know, I think sometimes, and I know you’ve felt this, as a parent, we can’t be at everything. So to miss the first day was hard,” she shared.

Still, she said her children reminded her of an important lesson.

“The other thing is, kids are so resilient. Humans are so resilient.”

The candid conversation offered fans another glimpse into Bush Hager’s family life, showing that even the most unexpected parenting moments can become treasured memories—and sometimes the quirkiest expressions of love are also the sweetest.
