While many famous faces quietly slipped out of Wimbledon’s Royal Box after the men’s match ended, one guest stayed firmly in his seat—and tennis fans couldn’t stop talking about it.
Sir David Beckham earned widespread praise after choosing to remain courtside for the women’s singles match, where world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka was making her Wimbledon debut of the tournament.
The Royal Box Emptied… But Beckham Stayed
Centre Court had been packed with celebrities for defending champion Jannik Sinner’s four-set victory over Miomir Kecmanović, with Beckham joined by his mother Sandra and stars including Katherine Jenkins, Ronan Keating, and Mary Berry.
But once the men’s match finished, many spectators headed out for refreshments, comfort breaks, or other engagements, leaving large sections of the prestigious Royal Box noticeably empty.
Sir David Beckham was praised by Aryna Sabalenka for staying in his seat as Wimbledon’s Royal Box emptied after the men’s tennis finished on day one of the tournament on Monday
One spectator shared a social media video of a much emptier Royal Box after the men’s tennis finished along with the hashtag #womeninsport
David happily sat solo to watch his friend play, with Aryna saying: ‘Sir David, thank you for being here!’
Pointless host Alexander Armstrong, 56, and his wife, Hannah Bronwen Snow, 49, remained in their seats after the men’s game and chatted with Sir David
The sportsman watched the game intently, while remaining guests were glued to their phones
Sir David conversed with former tennis player Debbie Jevans, while some of the seats surrounding them remained empty
One video circulating on social media quickly went viral, showing Beckham still watching from his seat while rows around him sat vacant. The clip was captioned:
“In a world where the stadium clears after the men’s match ends… #WomenInSport.”
The moment sparked plenty of praise online, with many applauding Beckham for staying to support the women’s game.
Aryna Sabalenka’s Heartfelt Message to Beckham
Sabalenka certainly noticed.
After defeating 19-year-old Serbian rising star Teodora Kostović 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets, the Belarusian thanked the Centre Court crowd before turning directly toward Beckham.
“Sir David, thank you for being here!”
The heartfelt moment brought smiles from the crowd and quickly became one of the most talked-about highlights of the opening day.
The two already share a close relationship away from tennis, having partnered through IM8, the premium nutrition and wellness company co-founded by Beckham and health sciences firm Prenetics.
Not Everyone Left
Although many guests departed between matches, Beckham wasn’t entirely alone.
Alexander Armstrong and his wife Hannah Bronwen Snow remained in their seats and were seen chatting with the football legend, while Beckham also spent time speaking with former tennis player and Wimbledon chair Debbie Jevans.
Photos showed Beckham watching the action attentively while some nearby guests appeared more interested in checking their phones than following the match.
Sabalenka Rates Her Own Performance
Speaking after her victory, Sabalenka praised her teenage opponent while admitting the second set proved more challenging.
“She brought a really good fight. She stepped in a little more in the second set.”
She also reflected on the pressure of playing on Centre Court for the first time.
“I think we all get nervous. It’s just part of our lives. With experience I’ve learned how to deal with nerves and expectations much better.”
When asked to score her own performance, Sabalenka smiled and replied:
“Let’s say 8 out of 10.”
