Former Countryfile presenter Julia Bradbury has shared an emotional update about how surviving breast cancer completely changed the way she lives her life.
The 55-year-old TV star, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, says one painful realization now shapes every decision she makes—and it’s something she wishes she’d understood much sooner.
A Cancer Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Julia underwent a mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction after doctors discovered a 6cm tumor. She also received chemotherapy as part of her treatment and has remained open with fans about her recovery ever since.
Now, years after overcoming the disease, Julia says the biggest change hasn’t been physical—it’s been her perspective on life.
In a heartfelt Instagram video, she admitted:
“Here’s something nobody warns you about when you come through something serious. It ruins your tolerance for wasted time.”
She reflected on how she once believed there would always be more days, more weeks, and more opportunities.
“I used to treat my days and weeks as if there would always be more of them.”
“Time Isn’t Unlimited”
In the caption accompanying her post, Julia delivered a simple but powerful message:
“I spent most of my life treating time like it was unlimited. It isn’t.”
She explained that facing a life-threatening illness completely changed the way she measures time.
“It took coming out the other side of a serious health issue to really feel that—not just know it. Nothing audits your weeks quite like being told they aren’t guaranteed.”
Julia added that she no longer wastes precious hours on things that don’t truly matter.
The Three Rules She Lives By Now
Since her recovery, Julia has adopted three personal principles that help her protect both her mental and physical well-being.
She now makes sure to:
-
Spend at least 10 minutes outdoors every day
-
Set aside quiet time alone without her phone or distractions
-
Be selective about who she spends time with, choosing people who make her laugh and bring positivity into her life
“None of it is dramatic,” she wrote.
“It’s just deciding on purpose, instead of letting the week decide for you.”
