Giovanna Fletcher has opened up about a deeply personal loss, revealing that she suffered a miscarriage after an unexpected pregnancy at the age of 40.
The 41-year-old author, podcast host and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! winner shared her emotional story during an honest conversation with close friend Emma Willis on her Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast. Her heartfelt confession has resonated with many parents who have experienced pregnancy loss.
A Surprise Pregnancy That Ended in Heartbreak
Giovanna and her husband, Tom Fletcher, the McFly musician, are already proud parents to three sons—Buzz, Buddy and Max. The couple were thrilled when they discovered they were expecting a fourth child last year.
However, the joy was short-lived.
Speaking candidly on the podcast, Giovanna revealed she experienced what is known as a chemical pregnancy, an early miscarriage that occurs shortly after implantation.
“I had another miscarriage last year, a chemical pregnancy. Well, it was a surprise pregnancy,” she shared.
Although the pregnancy came unexpectedly, Giovanna admitted she had already begun imagining life as a family of six before everything changed.
Why She No Longer Believes in the “12-Week Rule”
Through tears, Giovanna explained how the experience completely changed her perspective on keeping pregnancies private during the early weeks.
She said she no longer agrees with the long-standing tradition of waiting until 12 weeks before telling loved ones.
“I don’t agree with the 12-week rule. You need the support of the people around you,” she explained.
Giovanna believes sharing the news earlier allows family and close friends to celebrate the happy moments together—but also to provide comfort if things don’t go as planned.
“Allow yourself to feel other people’s joy, but also their sadness if there is a loss.”
Her honest comments have sparked conversations about the importance of emotional support following pregnancy loss.
A Life-Changing Realisation
Reflecting on the miscarriage, Giovanna admitted it prompted her to rethink how she approaches life.
Rather than simply trying to get through each busy day, she now wants to appreciate the moments that truly matter.
“When the pregnancy ended, I suddenly thought, well, I need to maybe change how I do things in 2026.”
She continued:
“I need to be able to enjoy the things I am doing, rather than constantly feeling like I am just getting through the things, because they’re all things I love doing. Let’s not get through—let’s enjoy life.”
Her emotional words highlighted how grief can reshape priorities and encourage people to live more intentionally.
How She Felt About Becoming a Mum Again at 40
Giovanna also admitted that being pregnant in her forties felt very different from her previous pregnancies.
Already raising three children, she recognised that welcoming another baby would have been a huge change—but one she would have embraced wholeheartedly.
“I’ve already got three incredible kids, and four is a lot of kids.”
Still, she said she would have considered another child an extraordinary gift.
“If the pregnancy had worked out, then it would have been a blessing. What a blessing to have another baby—that is such an incredible thing.”
