Dan Walker Reveals the Emotional Reality of BBC Breakfast: “I Was in the Toilets Just Crying”

For years, viewers saw Dan Walker as the calm, composed face of BBC Breakfast. What they didn’t see was the emotional toll the demanding schedule was taking behind the scenes.
The former BBC presenter has opened up about the severe sleep deprivation he experienced while hosting the popular morning programme, admitting there were times he became so exhausted that he would break down in tears after the show.
“By Wednesday I Was a Zombie”
Speaking during a previous appearance on This Morning, Dan revealed that his alarm clock rang at 3am every working day so he could make it to the studio in time for the live broadcast.
The relentless routine quickly caught up with him.

“By Wednesday I was full zombie mode,” Dan recalled.

He explained that the lack of sleep left him unexpectedly emotional, with even the smallest interactions triggering tears.

“At the end of the show, you’d be in the toilets just crying. Someone would say something nice about your trousers and you’d be in tears.”

Although he laughed about the experience, Dan admitted it wasn’t an everyday occurrence—but it was a very real consequence of prolonged sleep deprivation.Dan Walker talking on This Morning
The Hidden Cost of Early-Morning Television
Dan explained that when you’re consistently short on sleep, your emotions can become much harder to control.
The experience highlighted the less glamorous side of breakfast television, where presenters often begin work long before most people are awake.
After six years on BBC Breakfast, Dan decided to leave the programme in 2022 and joined Channel 5 News, moving away from the punishing overnight schedule.
A Healthier Routine Changed Everything
Life improved significantly after the move.
Dan later found himself waking at 5:30am for his work with Classic FM—a much later start than his BBC Breakfast days—and said the difference was remarkable.
He revealed he felt “great” and “refreshed,” adding that loving the job made the early starts much easier to handle.
A passionate radio presenter, Dan said one of his favourite parts of the role is connecting directly with listeners and hearing their feedback.
Why He Returned to Early Mornings
Despite knowing how demanding early starts can be, Dan admitted he wasn’t ready to walk away from every morning opportunity.
He explained that one particular role felt “too big of an opportunity to say no.”
The presenter said he didn’t want to look back years later and regret passing up a chance he genuinely wanted.
For Dan, the experience served as a reminder that while career opportunities can be exciting, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is just as important—and sometimes a little more sleep can make all the difference.
