Martin Kemp and Shirlie Open Up About the Secret Behind Their 38-Year Love Story: “We Survived It”

For decades, Martin Kemp and Shirlie Kemp have been one of Britain’s most enduring celebrity couples. While many high-profile relationships faded under the pressures of fame, the pair have built a marriage that has lasted nearly four decades—and now Shirlie has shared why she believes their love stood the test of time.
Speaking candidly on the Mid-point podcast, the 63-year-old reflected on navigating life together during the height of 1980s pop stardom, admitting that the entertainment world they experienced was completely different from today’s celebrity culture.
“We Survived It”
Martin, bassist with Spandau Ballet, first noticed Shirlie while watching Wham! perform on Top of the Pops. Although he later handed her his phone number after meeting again at a theatre event, things didn’t go quite as planned.
As Martin previously joked during I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Shirlie never called him back. Instead, it was her close friend and Wham! star George Michael who eventually picked up the phone on her behalf—leading to the couple’s first date.Meet Martin Kemp's pop icon wife and TV star kids
The rest, as they say, is history.

Looking back on those early years, Shirlie explained that celebrities once worked hard to protect their private lives.

“We would always go in and out of the back of clubs or restaurants because you didn’t want to be photographed then. Then, all of a sudden, people were paying photographers to come and photograph them.”

She believes that growing up during that era helped strengthen their relationship.

“It was a very different time for us. Why we survived it? I think we were just at the right place at the right time. That was our era and we understood it. Love is also a very grounding thing.”

Fame Was Different in the 1980s
Martin agreed, explaining that stardom once depended on mystery rather than constant exposure.
According to the actor and musician, fans only caught glimpses of their favourite stars through television appearances or magazine posters, leaving much to the imagination.
Today, however, he believes celebrities share almost every aspect of their daily lives on social media.

“Back then being a pop star was all about myth and legend. Nowadays people give you everything. You know what they’re wearing at home—they share every part of their lives.”

For Martin, the mystery surrounding celebrities in the 1980s made fame feel far more magical than it does today.
The Wedding That Upset Their Families
Shirlie has also spoken openly about another deeply personal decision that surprised those closest to them—their intimate wedding in Saint Lucia.
Rather than hosting a lavish celebrity ceremony, the couple chose to marry quietly on the Caribbean island with just a single witness present.
Appearing on the Travel Secrets podcast, Shirlie admitted the decision upset several family members, but insisted it was exactly the wedding she had always dreamed of.

“It was the wedding I wanted. I had a fear of big weddings and all the attention. Being in a band had already given me enough time in the spotlight.”

She explained that she wanted the day to focus solely on their relationship rather than becoming another public event.
The singer revealed she was inspired to choose Saint Lucia after hearing stories about the island from her bandmate Helen “Pepsi” DeMacque, whose family has roots there.
Today, Shirlie still describes their wedding as one of the happiest memories of her life.
Still Laughing Together After All These Years
Their latest reflections come shortly after Martin revealed he needed rescuing by firefighters after becoming trapped inside a lift before a DJ appearance in Falkirk.
After spending around an hour stuck in the elevator, the actor later shared a smiling photograph alongside the rescue crew, joking about the unexpected mishap.
Despite decades in the spotlight, Martin and Shirlie continue to prove that love, laughter, and staying grounded have been the foundations of one of Britain’s longest-lasting celebrity marriages.
