‘Emergency!’ Star Randolph Mantooth Dies at 80 After Long Health Battle

Randolph Mantooth, the actor widely recognized for his leading role in the classic television drama Emergency!, has died at the age of 80.

A Television Icon of the 1970s

Mantooth became a household name through his portrayal of paramedic John “Johnny” Gage in NBC’s Emergency!, which aired from 1972 to 1977.

The series followed the work of emergency medical personnel and became one of television’s defining dramas of the decade. Mantooth appeared throughout the show’s six-season run and later returned for several reunion television movies. He also voiced his character in the animated spin-off Emergency +4.

A Career That Spanned More Than Four Decades

Born Randy DeRoy Mantooth in Sacramento, California, in 1945, he studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York before launching his professional career.

Following early television appearances in series including Matt Lincoln, Night Gallery, McCloud and Alias Smith and Jones, Mantooth landed the role that would define his career.

He later became a familiar face in daytime television, portraying Alex Masters in the ABC soap opera Loving for more than 300 episodes before reprising the character in its spin-off The City. His final on-screen acting role came in the 2013 film Killer Holiday.

Champion of First Responders

Beyond acting, Mantooth remained closely connected to the emergency services community throughout his life.

Inspired by the impact of Emergency!, he worked with organizations supporting firefighters and emergency medical personnel, becoming a longtime advocate for first responders and helping promote awareness of their work.
