The countdown has officially begun for one of British television’s most anticipated comebacks.
After months of intense filming, Line of Duty has wrapped production on its long-awaited seventh season, with star Vicky McClure confirming that cameras have finally stopped rolling. Her emotional behind-the-scenes update instantly sent fans into celebration, as viewers prepare for the return of AC-12 in what promises to be the show’s most explosive chapter yet.
“We’re Off Duty!” — Vicky McClure Shares Emotional Farewell
Taking to Instagram, Vicky McClure, who reprises her iconic role as DCI Kate Fleming, posted a heartwarming photo alongside longtime co-stars Martin Compston and Adrian Dunbar.
Captioning the image with the simple words:
“And we’re Off Duty!!”
she reflected on the incredible journey of filming over the past four months.
“The last four months spent with two of my best mates, Martin Compston and Adrian Dunbar,” she wrote, before thanking the cast and crew for bringing Jed Mercurio’s latest script to life.
She also admitted she was looking forward to returning home after missing her family throughout production, bringing an emotional close to another demanding season behind the camera.
Fans Lose Their Minds Over the Update
It didn’t take long for social media to erupt.
Thousands of viewers flooded the comments section with excitement, many calling Line of Duty the greatest British crime drama ever made.
Messages included:
-
“I genuinely can’t wait. The best programme on television is finally coming back!”
-
“Mother of God… this is the news I’ve been waiting for!”
-
“2027 suddenly feels so far away.”
The reaction highlighted just how passionate the show’s fanbase remains, even after years away from screens.
A New Era for AC-12
Although familiar faces are returning, things won’t be quite the same when the new season begins.
Following major changes inside the police force, AC-12 has officially been disbanded and restructured, becoming the Inspectorate of Police Standards.
Despite the organisational shake-up, Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming and Ted Hastings find themselves reunited for what is described as their most sensitive investigation yet.
This time, the trio are tasked with examining allegations against Detective Inspector Dominic Gough, a highly decorated officer celebrated for his success against organised crime.
Behind the public praise, however, lies a far darker accusation.
Gough is suspected of abusing his position of trust to operate as a sexual predator, but as the investigation unfolds, the team begins to question whether his case is simply a distraction designed to hide an even greater conspiracy still operating deep inside the police force.
For longtime fans of Line of Duty, that premise immediately raises familiar questions about corruption, hidden networks and whether “the fourth man” mystery has truly ever ended.
Robert Carlyle Joins the Cast
One of the biggest surprises for Series 7 is the arrival of acclaimed actor Robert Carlyle.
He joins the drama as Detective Constable Shaun Massie, a Specialist Rifle Officer from Tactical Operations Unit 7.
Initially introduced as a reserved and isolated officer, Shaun’s behaviour reportedly changes dramatically once his commanding officer, Dominic Gough, becomes the centre of the investigation.
The key suspect himself will be portrayed by Tom Weston-Jones, adding another major name to the already impressive cast.
