For millions of viewers, Alan Titchmarsh has spent decades helping people create beautiful gardens and cherish the simple joys of home. But behind his familiar smile, the beloved television presenter has quietly been navigating one of the most emotional chapters of his own life.
After more than two decades devoted to building what he once described as the greatest creation of his life, Alan has walked away from the place that held some of his most treasured memories—and admits he simply can’t bear to look back.
A Difficult Decision After More Than 20 Years
Alan, 77, and his wife Alison have shared more than five decades of marriage, raising their two daughters before eventually becoming empty nesters.
Like many couples entering a new stage of life, they found themselves asking a difficult question: should they remain in the large family home they loved, or choose something more practical for the years ahead?
After much thought, they made the emotional decision to leave their Grade II-listed farmhouse in Hampshire, where they had lived since 2002, and begin a new chapter in a smaller bungalow in Surrey.
Although the move marked a fresh start, it also meant saying goodbye to something that had become deeply personal.
The Garden That Became His Greatest Masterpiece
While the house itself was filled with memories, it was the garden that made leaving so painful.
For almost 25 years, Alan poured countless hours into designing, planting and caring for the sprawling landscape, transforming it into a place that reflected his lifelong passion for gardening.
It wasn’t simply another project.
It became part of who he was.
Speaking openly about the move, Alan admitted the garden represented more than any television programme or professional achievement.
He described it as the creation he had loved more than anything he had ever made, built through years of patience, dedication and genuine affection.
That is precisely why walking away proved so emotional.
“I Can’t Look Back”
Despite how difficult the farewell has been, Alan says he knows dwelling on the past would only make it harder.
As he prepared to hand over the keys for the final time, he admitted there was only one way he could move forward.
He couldn’t look back.
The television favourite revealed that once the gate closed behind him, he had no intention of returning to relive what had been left behind.
The words reflected both heartbreak and acceptance—an acknowledgment that some chapters can only end by embracing the future instead of revisiting the past.
Why Downsizing Felt Like the Right Choice
Although leaving the property was emotionally challenging, Alan believes it was ultimately the sensible decision.
Maintaining more than four acres of beautifully landscaped gardens had become increasingly demanding, even with professional help.
He admitted that another decade in such a large property might simply have become too much.
Rather than waiting until circumstances forced the decision, he and Alison chose to make the change while they still felt able to enjoy the next stage of their lives.
Their Hampshire home was eventually sold after initially being listed for £3.95 million before its asking price was reduced. The couple have since settled into a more manageable home in Surrey.
A Smaller Garden, But a New Beginning
Life may now look very different.
Unlike his famous Hampshire garden, Alan’s new outdoor space is far more private and won’t become another television backdrop.
For someone whose career has inspired generations of gardeners, that feels like the end of an era.
Yet perhaps it also offers something he has rarely enjoyed throughout decades in the spotlight—a peaceful place to garden simply for himself.
Slowing Down… At Least in Theory
The move wasn’t the only promise Alan and Alison made to each other.
They also agreed it was finally time to ease their workload and enjoy a gentler pace of life, even setting aside Mondays and Fridays as days away from work.
Alan admits, however, that the plan hasn’t exactly gone to schedule.
Retirement still doesn’t appeal to him.
In fact, he jokes that his career revolves around the very hobby many people spend their retirement looking forward to.
Alongside presenting Love Your Weekend, Alan continues hosting his Classic FM programme, writing bestselling murder mystery novels, and sharing gardening advice through his increasingly popular YouTube channel, where hundreds of thousands of gardening enthusiasts continue to follow his expertise.
Turning the Page Without Forgetting the Past
For Alan Titchmarsh, moving home wasn’t simply about changing address.
It meant saying goodbye to years of memories, countless hours of work and a garden that became one of the greatest passions of his life.
Even so, he has chosen to focus on what lies ahead rather than what has been left behind.
Sometimes the hardest goodbyes aren’t about leaving a house—they’re about leaving a piece of yourself.
And while Alan says he can’t look back, it’s clear that the love, care and dedication he invested in that extraordinary garden will remain part of his story forever.
