For decades, Monty Don has been admired as the calm, reassuring face of Gardeners’ World—a man who seems most at peace among flowers, trees, and wide open gardens.
But behind that gentle public image was a painful chapter few people ever saw.
The beloved broadcaster has opened up about the heartbreaking moment his wife, Sarah, confronted him with an ultimatum that would ultimately change his life, his mental health, and their marriage forever.
A Breaking Point Behind Closed Doors
Monty, now 70, has spoken candidly about the devastating period that followed the collapse of his jewellery business, a setback that sent him into a deep depression.
While he struggled internally, those closest to him were living with the consequences.
Speaking on Gyles Brandreth’s Rosebud podcast, Monty recalled the life-changing conversation with Sarah.
She told him she loved him and didn’t want to leave him—but admitted their family could no longer continue living the way they were.
According to Monty, Sarah said she had reached a point where either he would have to move out, or she would take their three children and leave.
It wasn’t a threat made out of anger.
It was a desperate plea from someone trying to save both her husband and their family.
The Words That Changed Everything
Monty admitted he hadn’t fully realized how much his depression had changed him.
Looking back, he described himself as constantly angry, difficult to live with, and someone others understandably struggled to be around.
His immediate response revealed just how much was at stake.
He told Sarah that losing his family “would kill me.”
Knowing he couldn’t bear that outcome, he finally agreed to seek professional help.
That single decision marked the beginning of one of the most important turning points in his life.
Finding Hope Again
Monty later visited his doctor, initially talking about a physical complaint before the conversation turned to his emotional wellbeing.
He began taking antidepressant medication and says the change came surprisingly quickly.
Just days later, while washing dishes at home, he noticed sunlight falling across the leaves of a hedge outside his window.
For the first time in a long time, he realized he no longer felt overwhelmed by sadness.
Instead, he simply felt… okay.
He has described those following months as feeling like an extended holiday, recalling a renewed sense of peace and optimism after years of emotional darkness.
Monty remained on the medication for several years and has spoken openly about how important that treatment was in helping him recover.
A Love Story That Defied Expectations
The couple’s journey together began long before Monty became one of Britain’s best-known gardeners.
They first met while he was studying at Cambridge University.
Monty has previously admitted he experienced an intense attraction the moment he saw Sarah.
Their relationship, however, was anything but straightforward.
Sarah had married young and was already in an established life when they met.
Choosing Monty meant walking away from financial security to build a future with a student who had little money but plenty of ambition.
Despite the uncertainty, they stayed together.
A Proposal She Nearly Declined
Even their engagement came with unexpected drama.
During a trip to the Hebrides in Scotland, Monty proposed while the pair were rowing a small boat across calm waters.
Sarah wasn’t immediately convinced.
Monty has joked that he refused to row back until she gave him an answer.
After a short silence, she finally agreed.
Not wanting to risk a change of heart, Monty secretly booked their wedding registry office almost immediately and only told Sarah they were getting married about two days before the ceremony.
The couple married on 29 July 1983 before celebrating with a wedding breakfast at London’s famous L’Escargot restaurant.
More Than Four Decades Together
Today, Monty and Sarah have been married for more than 40 years and share three children—Adam, Freya and Tom—as well as the home and gardens that have become familiar to millions of viewers.
Their story is not one of perfection.
Instead, it’s one of resilience, honesty, and choosing to face life’s hardest moments together.
By speaking openly about depression and the difficult conversations that saved his family, Monty has offered encouragement to others facing similar struggles—showing that asking for help can sometimes become the first step toward healing both yourself and the people you love.
