Phillip Schofield Breaks His Silence On Fern Britton Rift After Her Emotional Admission: “They Were Very Strange Times”

For years, fans have wondered what truly happened behind the scenes between Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton.
Now, after Fern recently described their reported fallout as “very difficult” and “very upsetting,” Phillip has finally responded—offering a surprisingly gentle reflection on the relationship they once shared.
Phillip Responds To Fern’s Honest Comments
Former This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield has broken his silence following Fern Britton’s candid interview about their long-rumoured backstage rift.
Although the pair never publicly revealed what caused their friendship to break down, Fern admitted earlier this week that the experience had been deeply painful.
“It was hard, it was very difficult, very upsetting,” she said, while acknowledging that they had once enjoyed a close friendship and successful working partnership.Fern Britton's bitter feud with Phillip Schofield - bitter pay row to reunion snub | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV | Express.co.uk
Through his representative, Schofield has now shared his own perspective.

“They were very strange times, but he remembers his time working alongside Fern with nothing but fondness.”

The statement marks one of the rare occasions Phillip has publicly addressed their relationship.
From Television’s Golden Duo To Growing Distance
Schofield and Britton became one of Britain’s most popular daytime television duos after presenting This Morning together from 2002.
Their easy chemistry made them household favourites, but over time, speculation grew that tensions had developed behind the scenes.
Fern eventually left the programme in 2009. While neither presenter has ever explained exactly what led to the reported fallout, she has acknowledged that their friendship gradually changed.
“We did have a very good working relationship—until we didn’t,” Fern reflected.
Despite everything, she insisted she bears no ill will, adding that she hopes Phillip can eventually “find some happiness.”
A Complicated Chapter
Fern also admitted Phillip’s highly publicised departure from ITV in 2023 brought mixed emotions.
She explained that because of their complicated history, it was difficult to know exactly how she felt when his scandal unfolded.
“I wish him well,” she said. “I hope it all settles down.”
Her comments suggested that although the friendship may never have recovered, any lingering bitterness has softened with time.
Phillip’s Life Away From Television
Schofield has remained largely out of the spotlight since leaving ITV in 2023 after admitting he had lied about a consensual relationship with a younger male colleague who had worked on This Morning.
He has consistently maintained that the relationship began only after the man became an adult employee at ITV, describing it as “unwise” but not illegal.
His most recent television appearance came in 2024 with Channel 5’s Phillip Schofield: Cast Away, while earlier this year he admitted he believes there is “no way back” for him in mainstream television.
Meanwhile, former co-host Holly Willoughby appears ready to begin a fresh chapter of her own, recently announcing a new lifestyle YouTube project with husband Dan Baldwin.
A Quiet Response That Speaks Volumes
While many expected Phillip to revisit old tensions, his response instead focused on gratitude rather than conflict.
Whether the full story behind one of British television’s most talked-about friendships is ever revealed remains uncertain—but for now, both presenters appear to be looking forward rather than back.
