Carol Vorderman has revealed a major update on her health after a frightening accident left her unconscious, rushed to hospital and struggling with severe dizziness and vomiting for weeks.
The former Countdown star opened up about the alarming ordeal, explaining how what began as a seemingly ordinary trip over a tree root suddenly turned into a serious medical emergency.
Carol, 65, said she fell and hit her head near her home at the end of May, losing consciousness before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
But the drama did not end when she was initially discharged.
By the following day, Carol said she was unable to sit upright and was suffering from relentless vomiting — forcing her to return to hospital for further assessment.
Now, weeks after the terrifying incident, the television favourite has revealed the surprising treatment she says finally helped resolve almost all of the debilitating dizziness that remained after her fall.
“I Tripped, Unconscious, Hospital, Concussion”
Sharing the full story with her followers, Carol recalled just how quickly the accident unfolded.
“Last day in May, I tripped over a tree root near my house on a public path, stumbled and fell on my head,” she explained.
Carol said she was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital by ambulance following the fall.
Even amid the frightening situation, there was one strangely fitting moment that later gave the family something to smile about.
According to Carol, her son Cameron told her that “The Final Countdown” was playing in the ambulance — an amusing coincidence given her decades-long association with the iconic Channel 4 quiz show Countdown.
“My son Cam told me the ‘Final Countdown’ was playing in the ambulance. Funny,” she recalled.
However, what happened next was far more concerning.
Her Condition Took A Worrying Turn The Next Day
Carol was initially discharged from hospital, but her symptoms soon became dramatically worse.
The following day, she said she could not even sit upright and began experiencing severe, continual vomiting.
“Anyway, I was discharged and the next day couldn’t sit up and had massive continual vomiting so straight back to hospital,” she revealed.
Carol thanked staff at Bristol Royal Infirmary, where she underwent further medical assessment, including CT scans.
She was eventually discharged again, but the physical signs of her accident remained impossible to hide.
Carol revealed that almost half of her face developed bruising and a black eye — which explained why followers had seen much less of her on social media during June.
“Almost half of my face developing black eye and bruising,” she explained, joking that this was why she had not been making her usual reels.
Over the following two or three weeks, the most obvious effects of the accident gradually began to settle.
But one disturbing symptom refused to disappear.
“It Was Like I Was Walking On A Moving Ship”
Despite recovering from the initial concussion and bruising, Carol continued to experience persistent dizziness.
She described the sensation vividly, saying it felt as though she was constantly “walking on a moving ship”.
For anyone who has experienced serious vertigo, it is an unsettling feeling that can make even ordinary movement difficult.
Determined to find out what was happening, Carol eventually visited a specialist concussion clinic that works with professional athletes.
That decision appears to have been the breakthrough she needed.
A specialist named Sophie carried out a series of tests and suspected that Carol could be experiencing BPPV — benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.
BPPV is a common cause of vertigo and can occur when tiny calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear become displaced, interfering with the body’s balance system.
Carol was careful to stress that she was describing the condition in her own words rather than offering medical advice.
But what happened next amazed her.
The Simple Manoeuvre That Changed Everything
Carol said the specialist performed what is known as the Epley manoeuvre, a series of controlled head and body movements commonly used to treat BPPV.
The technique is designed to reposition displaced particles within the inner ear.
Carol described sitting upright on a treatment bed with her legs stretched out while keeping her eyes open.
The specialist then carefully moved her backwards into different positions.
The sensation was immediate — and intense.
“OMG it felt like I was falling off the edge of the earth!!!!” Carol recalled.
The specialist held her safely in position until the overwhelming sensation subsided before repeating the process on the other side.
For Carol, the results were remarkable.
After several rounds of treatment, she said around 95% of her dizziness had disappeared.
After weeks of feeling as though the ground beneath her was constantly moving, the improvement offered enormous relief.
Carol’s Update Brings Relief After A Frightening Few Weeks
The health update explains why Carol had been noticeably quieter online following the accident.
What started with one unexpected trip over a tree root led to unconsciousness, an ambulance journey, hospital visits, vomiting, facial bruising and weeks of lingering dizziness.
Fortunately, Carol’s latest update suggests she has made significant progress.
Her experience also highlighted a lesser-known possible cause of persistent vertigo following a head injury — although anyone experiencing similar symptoms should seek professional medical assessment rather than attempting treatment without appropriate guidance.
After such a frightening few weeks, Carol’s revelation that 95% of the dizziness has now gone is undoubtedly the update her worried followers had been hoping to hear.
And in typical Carol fashion, even one of the scariest moments of the ordeal came with an extraordinary coincidence.
Being rushed to hospital unconscious was frightening enough.
Having “The Final Countdown” playing in the ambulance?
That was one detail even the former Countdown legend could see the funny side of.
