Dr Ranj Singh has shared one of the most personal stories of his life, revealing how a marriage he once described as “the best day of my life” eventually led him to confront a truth he could no longer ignore.
The former This Morning presenter and Strictly Come Dancing star has spoken candidly about the emotional journey that saw him come out as gay in his 30s, a decision that ultimately brought his marriage to an end but allowed him to finally embrace the person he truly is.
The Life He Always Dreamed Of Still Didn’t Feel Complete
Reflecting on the period before coming out, Dr Ranj admitted he believed he had achieved everything he had ever wanted. He had built a successful medical career, found television fame, owned a home, and was married.
From the outside, his life appeared perfect.
Yet despite reaching every milestone he had spent years working towards, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.
Speaking to The Big Issue, he explained that therapy became the turning point that forced him to ask himself why happiness still felt out of reach.
“I’d ticked all my boxes,” he said. “So the big question was, why am I still not 100 per cent happy? Why does it still feel like something’s not right?”
The answer, he discovered, was that he had spent years trying to become the person he believed he was expected to be rather than the person he truly was.
Coming Out Meant His Marriage Had to End
Dr Ranj revealed that he first confided in a close friend before finding the courage to tell his wife and later his family.
The conversation marked the beginning of an incredibly difficult chapter.
Although he has always spoken warmly about his former marriage and described his wedding day as one of the happiest moments of his life, he acknowledged that the relationship could not survive once he accepted his sexuality.
Looking back, he described the experience as feeling like “everything fracturing and then falling apart” as the life he had carefully built suddenly changed forever.
His Family’s Reaction Became an Unexpected Source of Strength
Growing up in a traditional Indian Sikh family, Dr Ranj admitted that telling his relatives felt even more daunting than speaking to his wife.
To his relief, the response was far kinder than he had feared.
He recalled his brothers reacting with love and acceptance, describing it as “a beautiful moment.” His friends, he added, were equally supportive, helping him gain the confidence to finally live openly and authentically.
Their encouragement became a vital part of his journey toward self-acceptance after years of hiding an important part of his identity.
Public Attention Also Brought Pain
When Dr Ranj competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2018, his personal life once again became the subject of headlines.
His former father-in-law publicly admitted that the breakdown of the marriage had been devastating for the family and said that seeing Dr Ranj on television continued to bring back painful memories.
While the comments highlighted the heartbreak experienced by those around him, Dr Ranj has consistently spoken with compassion about everyone affected by that period, acknowledging that coming to terms with his sexuality changed many lives, not just his own.
Finding Happiness Again
Today, Dr Ranj appears to have found the peace he spent so many years searching for.
In 2025, he introduced actor James Colebrook as his partner on Instagram, giving fans a glimpse into a happier chapter of his personal life.
After years of questioning why success alone could not make him feel complete, Dr Ranj says accepting his true identity has transformed the way he sees himself.
His story is not simply about the end of a marriage—it is about the courage to choose honesty over expectation, even when that choice changes everything.
