Dr Ranj Singh has spoken publicly for the first time after his former wife shared an emotional and deeply personal account of how their marriage ended, revealing the heartbreak, guilt, and painful lessons he still carries years later.
The television doctor and former This Morning favourite said he never expected to revisit one of the most difficult chapters of his life, but felt compelled to respond after his ex-wife, Sulvinder, described how their divorce left her feeling “unattractive,” “ashamed,” and struggling to rebuild her confidence.
Rather than dispute her experience, Dr Ranj chose a message rooted in empathy, insisting that there were “no winners” in what he described as a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved.
A Viral Post That Reopened Old Wounds
The renewed attention came after Sulvinder marked what would have been their 20th wedding anniversary by sharing an honest reflection on social media about the lasting impact of their separation.
She admitted she spent years grieving not only the end of her marriage, but also the future she believed she had been building.
“I mourned,” she wrote. “The future I thought I had was gone, and the person I thought I had married was gone as well.”
Although she tried to embrace a fresh start through travelling, work and socialising, she confessed that the emotional scars remained for years, preventing her from fully opening her heart again.
She also revealed that the divorce severely affected her self-esteem, leaving her feeling deeply insecure and ashamed before eventually deciding to reclaim her own story and move forward.
Her post quickly resonated with thousands online, prompting widespread discussion and eventually leading Dr Ranj to address the situation himself.
“This Is Something I Never Expected to Revisit”
Taking to Instagram, Dr Ranj acknowledged that speaking publicly about such a personal period was never something he had planned to do again.
He explained that nearly two decades have passed since the end of his marriage, yet he recognises that the memories remain painful.
“I’m genuinely sad that this subject can still bring up pain and difficult feelings,” he wrote.
“That has never been, and would never be, my intention.”
He stressed that whenever he has previously spoken about his divorce or coming out, it has only been when directly asked, and only because he hoped sharing his experience might help someone facing similar struggles.
“I don’t do it for attention or sympathy,” he added. “It remains a very painful time.”
Coming to Terms With His Sexuality
Dr Ranj married Sulvinder while still in his twenties.
Years later, after extensive personal reflection and therapy, he came to understand and accept that he is gay.
He explained that discovering his identity was not a deliberate choice or an attempt to deceive anyone.
Instead, it was part of a complicated personal journey that unfolded over time.
“Identity and sexuality are complex, fluid and evolving things,” he said.
Looking back, he admitted that life might have unfolded differently had he understood himself sooner, but emphasised that people make the best decisions they can with the knowledge they have at the time.
“There Are No Winners”
Perhaps the most powerful part of his statement came as he reflected on the nature of heartbreak itself.
“We all make decisions and take steps we feel are for the best at the time,” he wrote.
“Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we don’t.”
“When we don’t, it can be painful and messy, but more than that, it’s just sad and heartbreaking for everyone involved.”
“There are no winners in a breakup.”
Rather than focusing on blame, Dr Ranj said he prefers to remember the relationship with gratitude, respect and kindness, recognising what they shared and what they learned together.
Looking Forward With Kindness
Now in a long-term relationship with fitness expert James Colebrook, Dr Ranj said both he and the world have changed enormously since those difficult years.
He believes the most important thing anyone can do after heartbreak is continue moving forward with compassion—for others and for themselves.
“It’s important we keep moving forward,” he concluded.
“As long as every step we take is with kindness—towards others and ourselves—that’s all that matters.”
An Outpouring of Support
His thoughtful response was met with overwhelming encouragement from fans and friends.
James Colebrook publicly commented, “Love you and always proud of you,” while many followers praised Dr Ranj for responding with honesty, empathy and grace instead of anger.
The television doctor has previously admitted that one of his greatest regrets is the pain his ex-wife experienced during their separation.
In an earlier interview, he acknowledged that she “didn’t deserve any of that” and said he remains deeply sorry for the hurt caused during one of the most difficult periods of both of their lives.
Years after their marriage ended, both Dr Ranj and Sulvinder have shared deeply personal reflections from opposite sides of the same story. While their experiences are undeniably different, both have spoken openly about loss, healing and the long journey toward acceptance—offering a reminder that some of life’s most painful chapters rarely have simple answers.
