He spoke about his health issue on the show

Almost 10 years ago, Alan was forced to undergo knee surgery after years of bending down in gardens left him with painful, damaged tissue and cartilage. The procedure, performed in 2018, had him clearing out the damage in his knees, and in an interview at the time, Alan said, “I had it all cleared out, and they feel so much better.”

“I’ve got bad knees from all the kneeling I’ve done, and it’s a bit frayed in there, but I feel like a spring chicken again now.”

However, life has kept Alan on his toes, and since his surgery, he’s faced more than his fair share of health challenges. During the lockdown, Alan suffered another setback when he broke his ankle after slipping on wet grass. Despite staying active, walking 26,000 steps a day and maintaining his garden, the accident left him reliant on crutches for six weeks.

“I broke my ankle at the beginning of September,” Alan explained. “I slipped on wet grass, and I was on crutches for six weeks. It was really frustrating because I couldn’t even carry a cup of tea!”

Despite the setback, Alan’s positivity hasn’t wavered. In a recent appearance on Love Your New Year’s Day with Alan Titchmarsh (January 1), Alan spoke candidly about how he’s come to terms with his age and health issues. Chatting with guests Bonnie Langford and Gregor Fisher, Alan shared, “Your age. You can’t fight it, but at the same time, being realistic and adventurous is key.”

During the show, Gregor joked about Alan’s ability to continue dancing despite his age and health concerns, prompting Alan to prove his point by getting down on his knees with ease. But in typical Alan style, he quipped, “I’ll pay for that later!”
