Ann Curry has publicly expressed her support for Brooke Nevils, the former NBC employee who accused Matt Lauer of sexual assault, as Nevils prepares to release her memoir. In Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Choose to Believe, out February 3, Nevils details her experiences with Lauer and the fallout after he was fired from Today in 2017.

In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, Curry, 69, described Nevils as “good-hearted, credible, and brave,” praising her courage to share her story. Curry, who co-anchored Today alongside Lauer from 2010–2011, has long supported women who reported misconduct, previously confronting NBC management in 2012 after a staffer shared allegations of harassment.
Nevils, 41, revealed she felt isolated and afraid when reporting Lauer’s alleged assault at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She spent time in a psychiatric ward after leaving NBC, describing herself as “compulsive, paranoid, and drinking all the time.” Today, she is happily married with two children, rebuilding a life she once feared she would never live.
“This isn’t the kind of book anyone dreams of writing,” Nevils said. “But it is the book I needed when I felt alone, worthless, and afraid to ask these questions out loud.” She hopes her memoir will help others navigate difficult truths and make informed choices in the complex gray areas of sexual harassment and assault.
Curry added, “Brooke Nevils is a credible young woman of good character. She came to NBC News brimming with talent. I believe she is telling the truth. And that breaks my heart.”
Matt Lauer has denied the allegations of rape, admitting to an extramarital affair in 2019 but asserting it was consensual. NBC previously condemned his conduct as “appalling, horrific, and reprehensible,” which led to his dismissal.
Nevils’ memoir promises a candid and unflinching look at the challenges survivors face, shining a light on resilience, courage, and the power of telling one’s truth.
