Anonymous Tip Sparks New Search for Savannah Guthrie’s Missing Mother in Mexico

A new lead has reignited hopes in the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie. Volunteers in Mexico said they launched a search after receiving an anonymous tip suggesting that the 84-year-old could be buried in an unmarked grave near the U.S.–Mexico border.

Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, head of the group Buscando Corazones Nogales, shared that the tip arrived Wednesday, pointing to a site northwest of the border city of Nogales, known locally as “Mariposa” or “Butterfly.” The location, previously home to 25 unmarked graves, became the focus of volunteers digging through dry, rocky terrain, hoping to find Nancy.

“The call gave us clues that her remains might be in a grave over a stream in the Mariposa area,” Ayala Ortiz told El Imparcial. Despite a thorough search, no trace of Nancy was found, but the group vowed to continue their efforts.

The operation included coordination with the Sonora State Commission for the Search of Missing Persons, along with municipal and state security forces ensuring the volunteers’ safety.

Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the early hours of February 1, 2026. Her case has drawn widespread attention, prompting community alerts, social media discussions, and law enforcement activity both in the U.S. and Mexico.

Authorities continue to investigate, and volunteers remain committed to searching areas where missing persons may be located, holding onto hope for Nancy’s safe return.
